Senior Control Assurance Researcher

Position Summary:

The SEI’s Formal Verification of Cyber-physical Systems (FV-CPS) initiative creates and applies state-of-the-art techniques, theories, tools, and prototypes to improve the state of the practice for the development of predictably trustworthy cyber-physical systems that can operate in changing, uncertain and even adversarial conditions. We are looking for a driven researcher with a focus on control-theoretical approaches to join a team of experienced engineers and researchers to develop solutions for developing and assuring autonomous cyber-physical systems.
 

Duties:

  • Developing solutions for designing, implementing and assuring safe and secure autonomous systems bridging the gap between the state of the art in control theory and the state of the practice
  • Conducting research to advance the state of the art in control of autonomous cyber-physical systems, and verification of their physical behavior
  • Developing project proposals and leading project execution
  • Contributing to diverse teams composed of colleagues, customers, and others, to deliver solutions

Requirements:

  • MS in Control Systems, Automation or related discipline with eight (8) years of experience; OR PhD in the same fields with five (5) years of experience
  • Experience with control applied to quadcopters
  • Experience with applying control theory for assurance of cyber-physical systems
  • Movement between buildings within the SEI and CMU community required
  • Willingness to travel to various locations to support the SEI’s overall mission. This includes sponsor sites, conferences, and offsite meetings on occasion. Moderate Travel (15%)
     

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Expert knowledge of control-theory based approaches for system control
  • Application of control for safety and security in cyber-physical systems
  • Strong research and writing skills
  • Ability to present technical topics to audiences from senior leadership to technical experts

Desired Experience:

  • Knowledge of artificial intelligence and machine learning applied to control
  • Published peer-reviewed papers in relevant venues
  • Demonstrable research experience
  • Software development experience
