Position Summary
The Senior Content Strategist for Social Media will develop and execute a strategy for Washington University School of Medicine's social media presence and will continually foster a vibrant presence for the school on social media, thereby playing an integral role in communicating and fulfilling the school’s mission. Central to this strategy will be integrating social media with other components of key strategic communications initiatives, including such channels as news releases, websites, podcasts, photography and videography. The Senior Content Strategist for Social Media will work with the Executive Director of Integrated Marketing & Branding to set goals, write guidelines, define voices, educate internal staff and track outcomes. The Senior Content Strategist for Social Media will monitor and influence social media conversations about the school and its people and will provide guidance and resources to school faculty and staff who have operate other institutional social media accounts.
The individual in this role is a member of the Integrated Marketing & Branding Team within WashU's Medicine Marketing and Communications. The Senior Content Strategist for Social Media reports to the Executive Director of Integrated Marketing & Branding.


Job Description

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with the executive director of integrated marketing and branding and others to craft a proactive social media strategy that will leverage communications efforts and support overall marketing efforts for WashU Medicine Marketing and Communications and the School of Medicine.
  • Implement the strategy by:
    • Generating and posting accurate, effective and engaging social media content.
    • Working closely with MedMC’s design, web content strategy, Outlook, photography, videography and news teams to ensure efforts are aligned.
    • Developing engaging interactive social media content and campaigns to leverage the social nature of social media, especially projects that let our audiences hear the voices of the people of the school and that encourage engagement.
    • Developing compelling and authentic voices for several School of Medicine social media channels, including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram and recommend which platforms are most effective.
  • Monitor and participate in conversations about the School, its people and its business units on social media and update MedMC leadership, staff members and others as needed. Seek out influencers to help share our messages.
  • Monitor analytics on social media campaigns and produce regular reports on outcomes. Stay abreast of social media best practices and monitor social media efforts at peer institutions and apply learnings.
  • Establish and document best practices and standards for all faculty and staff who manage accounts representing business units of the school on social media. Offer regular training sessions and presentations on social media to members of the school community.
  • Review requests from campus partners to establish official social media accounts and advise on best practices, compliance with HIPAA and adherence to the brand.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

Ability to travel to and from client meetings at the School of Medicine; travel to on- and off-campus locations as needed, per client requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Journalism, Strategic Communications or similar field.
  • A strong portfolio that demonstrates knowledge and proficiency in writing and organizing content for social media platforms.
  • At least two years of professional, full-time experience with managing social media accounts.
  • Experience in communications in academic, health-care or scientific institutions.
  • Experience in collaborating with others in strategic communications.
  • Basic familiarity with photo editing and graphic design tools such as PhotoShop and InDesign and knowledge integrating social media into digital marketing strategies helpful.
  • Experience using social media analytics and measurement to inform decision-making.
  • Mastery of best practices of writing, editing and optimizing audience-focused content for social media.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of AP editorial style.
  • Knowledge of and appreciation for brand management best practices and the ability to employ them with regard to the Washington University School of Medicine brand.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to prioritize and self-manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to adjust to change and demands on time.
  • Demonstrated aptitude to quickly and effectively adapt to new circumstances and technologies.
  • Strong desire to develop new knowledge and professional skills on a continual basis.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with internal and external clients.

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in English, Journalism, Communications or Marketing.
  • At least five years of professional experience with writing, editing and optimizing content for digital communications.
  • A strong portfolio that demonstrates knowledge in writing and organizing content for the web.

Salary Range
Base pay is commensurate with experience.

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
