The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Central Human Resources, is currently recruiting for a Senior Compensation Specialist.

Primary Duties:

  • Collaborates with customers to determine compensation needs and develop action plans to meet the client's requests.
  • Consults with customers to determine effective and efficient organizational structure and resource allocation within budgetary restraints to meet the needs of the unit.
  • Performs job analysis and job evaluation to include organizational analysis and recognize the multiple markets in which the University competes for talent. Participates in market salary surveys and market pricing to determine internal and external job value. Identifies job descriptions and career ladders to assist customers in designing effective development opportunities with the unit.
  • Provide advice and counsel to customers on day-to-day compensation issues, policy interpretation, problem resolution, and compliance with University regulations. Responds to inquiries on applicable federal and State laws and regulations pertaining to the administration of classification and compensation programs (e.g., Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) provisions, overtime pay, and minimum wage.)
  • Analyzes compensation data to determine trends and variances. Recommends a variety of approaches to address variances and compensation issues. Identifies, develops, and implements process improvements to enhance workflow and operations.
  • Reviews new positions in anticipation of recruitment to ensure appropriate classification. Based on position-specific information, determines if an existing description can be used for classification. As necessary, modifies and creates new descriptions which accurately reflect current roles, responsibilities, and requirements.
  • Performs compensation data integrity analysis and identifies issues and provides recommendations to correct. 
  • Follows-up with customers to ensure data is accurate.
  • Leads compensation projects and/or initiatives such as creation of new job families, executive compensation, or review of compensation structure. 
  • Participates on multi-disciplinary teams/projects and complete long or short-term goals including contributing to the planning, scoping, and completion of projects. Coordinates resources and ensures project or initiative is delivered on-time.  Assists with developing and conducting raining to ensure compensation policies, procedures, and practices are understood and followed.
  • Serves as liaison to community and campus. Supports Human Resources management in the development of strategies, objectives, budgets, and in fostering improvements in policies and procedures. Develop and maintain appropriate metrics/tracking mechanisms to measure results.
  • Maintains and nurtures effective communication and partnerships across the various functions of Human Resource Services and acts as resource and mentor to other staff with training activities and guidance.
  • Attends classification and compensation meetings at the University System of Maryland (USM) as requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

 

Qualifications

  

Education: Bachelor's degree.

Experience: Four (4) years of experience in compensation including job analysis, job evaluation, and demonstrated proficiency in database and spreadsheet tools.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Ability to competently perform position requirements.
  • Extensive knowledge of theories, principles and procedures relating to position classification and job analysis.
  • Considerable knowledge of specific regulations, procedures, and precedents applicable to preparation of market studies, compensation actions, and related pay determinations.
  • Knowledge of the provisions of federal and state laws affecting compensation (e.g., FLSA, Affirmative Action, Equal Pay Act, FMLA, Parental Leave Act, ADA).
  • Knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws.
  • Skill in effective use of applicable technology/systems.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Ability to work cooperatively with others and use independent judgement in resolving issues and concerns.
  • Ability to demonstrate, understand, apply, and adhere to the UMB Core Values of Respect and Integrity, Well-being and Sustainability, Equity and Justice, and Innovation and Discovery.

Hiring Range: $90,000 - $98,000 (Commensurate with education and experience)
