Job Description

The Senior Communications Specialist, under general supervision, is assigned to perform various communications duties for the Department of Petroleum Engineering with in-depth understanding of the technical jargon specific to our industry. The position is primarily responsible for serving as a communications liaison and creating or updating and implementing the strategic communication plan for the department.


  • Developing content for web, print and digital pieces, news stories, and recruitment material.
  • Facilitating the completion of print and digital projects
  • Coordinating electronic communications to support the goals of the department and engineering program to include demonstration of significant proficiency in working in corporate environments.
  • Developing experience and skills by managing diverse communication channels and audiences, from executive-level stakeholders to technical teams and clients
  • Handling multifaceted communication projects that require a high level of coordination, strategic thinking, and detailed execution
  • Actively engage with industry partners. Managing these relationships through targeted and effective communication strategies will play a vital role in our ongoing efforts to expand our research and grow our academic programs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What we need:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five years of communications and/or marketing experience.

What is helpful:

  • Experience in communications, content creation, journalism, public relations and/or marketing experience.
  • Experience writing content for journalistic or publications news.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Proficient knowledge of writing and how to tailor writing style for various audiences and specific outlets.
  • Understanding of AP style.
  • Ability to edit for grammar, clarity, organization, style and consistency.
  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multitask and work collaboratively with others.
  • Demonstrated ability working under deadlines.
  • Knowledge of social media analytics.
  • Working knowledge of AP Style writing.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Cloud.
