Job Description

The Nevada State Public Health Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine invites applications for a Clinical Laboratory Scientist, to be hired at one of two levels based on candidate qualifications.

Senior Clinical Laboratory Scientist

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) uses extensive knowledge to independently perform high complexity laboratory analytical procedures on blood, body fluids, and samples related to public safety and/or public health investigations. The Clinical Laboratory Scientist is responsible for the technical accuracy, instrument operation, quality control, and result reporting per established policies and procedures. The Clinical Laboratory Scientist is accountable to ensure timely and accurate results are reported to the appropriate public health staff and physicians in a courteous and professional manner. Some support tasks will be required to maintain laboratory operations. The Senior Clinical Laboratory Scientist (SCLS) brings greater experience, independence/autonomy and is proficient in multiple departmental specialties. In the newborn screening area, multiple specialties are offset by the follow-up requirement.

Supervisor, Clinical Laboratory Scientist

The Supervisor is responsible for an assigned analytical section of the Nevada State Public Health Laboratory (NSPHL).  The Supervisor not only performs departmental testing but also coordinates and provides daily oversight and supervision and monitors performance measures.  The Supervisor assures scheduling of staff to meet analytical demands, turn-around times, client needs and outbreak/public health emergency timely laboratory response.  The position assures the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) utilized in area of responsibility is working as designed and documented appropriately. LIMS processes are tested and validated before being used in the production LIMS environment.  The position assures employees are adequately trained, perform necessary competency assessments on regular intervals, and participate in national proficiency testing programs. The Supervisor participates in the long-range planning for the unit, acts as a technical consultant, and ensures compliance with all regulations. The Supervisor promotes the NSPHL, assures the upmost professionalism is demonstrated by staff, stimulates a positive outlook/employee behavior and develops action plans to improve service to clients.  Supervisory Departments include:  Molecular/Research, Serology, Microbiology, Newborn Screening and Tuberculosis.  Supervisors may be assigned one or more departments and/or non-clinical specialties such as Food and Water testing.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and two years of related experience OR

Master's Degree and two years of related experience OR

Doctorate and one year of related experience

Related Experience:  Performing highly complex laboratory testing of human samples and clinical regulatory lab requirements; chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology

Certification and Licensure:  State of Nevada laboratory personnel certification as either a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or as a General Supervisor or the ability to obtain such certification within three months of hire

Schedule and Travel Requirements:  Weekend and holiday work is required on a rotation schedule if job assignment warrants. After hours or call-in work may be required in response to public health emergencies or significant events. Scheduling of hours may be changed as necessary. Occasional travel.
