Position Summary

Under the Director of Career & Leadership Development, the incumbent performs multifaceted student services including career counseling, co-curriculum programming, and the daily supervision of career counseling interns. This role involves complex work to enhance career counseling and co-curricular career development programs, that positively impact students’ success, primarily through individual and group counseling sessions and workshops. Aligned with the university’s strategic vision, the incumbent collaborates with campus partners to improve career counseling services and increase awareness of CLD services and platforms. The incumbent performs ongoing assessment and analysis of the impact of CLD programs on student retention and post-graduation achievements and provides data-driven insights to inform decision making. The incumbent remains current on professional best practices and maintains positive relationships with faculty, external community representatives, and relevant professional organizations.

Position Information

Lead Career Counseling Services & Programs

  • Lead implementation of career counseling, and college and/or academic department specific career development workshops.
  • Lead the development and implementation of co-curricular leadership development programs; assess such programs through data collection and analysis, provide recommendations to division leadership on further development.
  • Provides comprehensive career counseling services to students and student groups, including planning, developing and conducting student services-related instructional sessions, courses and/or seminars.
  • Maintains professional relationships with students, faculty and representatives of the outside community.
  • Collaborate with external university partners in the implementation of career development initiatives, including promotional campaigns for effective recruitment of student participants, sharing of enrollment data in accordance with FERPA, and/or participation rates, and act as a partner in program improvement.
  • Assist the Director with day-to-day operations for CLD and provide lead work direction.
  • Assist in the planning and assessment of comprehensive career counseling and advising services, and train the career counselors in the use of career development tools and technology for career planning and development.
  • In collaboration with campus partners, scale career counselor services through innovation, collaboration with campus partners, and technology.
  • Assist in recruiting, hiring and training career counseling interns on career readiness skills, division specific advising techniques, and workshop presentations; ensure interns are aware of department, division and institution policies and procedures; collaborate with the division’s field placement supervisor to ensure interns make progress in the internship and are successful in the practicum.
  • Contribute to program development through best practice research, analysis, reporting, and evaluation by remaining current in the profession and in career development trends in higher education.
  • Support the division leadership in partnering with academic departments to integrate career development into academic programs.
  • Conduct workshops on career-related topics, and develop career services relevant to student learning outcomes.

Data Collection and Analysis

  • Performs in-depth analysis of individual student or group problems of considerable complexity; collects and analyzes data from career counseling services and career development initiatives, prepare reports for division and campus leadership; provide data and analysis to division leadership to inform future programming development.
  • Assist in assessing and evaluating the impact of career development programming on student success through analysis of survey data, appointment data, and student success data such as First Destination Survey data to inform the division’s approaches to career development.

Student Services Platform Management & Promotion

  • Lead division staff in training on and utilizing career counseling technology platforms and in the promotion of these career development tools to student and faculty audiences in order to raise awareness and increase usage.
  • Liaise with Information Technology Services (ITS) to manage the backend processes for the division’s career development platforms (i.e., single sign-on, data feeds, general troubleshooting).
  • Participate in the Marketing and Communication Plan for CLD platforms, and develop engaging marketing materials (posters, flyers, banners, targeted email campaigns) highlighting the benefits of Handshake, VMock and Big Interview.
  • Under the direction of division leadership, the incumbent implements the communication plan aimed at promoting career counseling services and platforms, as well as undergraduate career readiness courses each semester, leveraging marketing strategies, outreach efforts, and the utilization of multiple communication channels (EAB, social media, Handshake, campus signage).
  • Collaborate with student groups and student organizations to co-host workshops or events that showcase the value of these platforms. Encourage student ambassadors to share their positive experiences with Handshake, VMock and Big Interview.
  • Collaborate with Faculty and Advisors to provide them with information, career readiness assignments, and on how CLD website, Handshake, VMock and Big Interview can complement career education; encourage them to recommend and promote the website and platforms to students.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities:
The following knowledge and abilities as well as those listed at lower levels in the Student Services Professional series are required for appointment to this classification. Thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned or the ability to quickly acquire such knowledge. General knowledge of the policies, practices and activities of Student Services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned; general knowledge of the principles, problems and methods of public administration, including organizational, personnel and fiscal management; general knowledge of advanced statistical and research methods.

Ability to carry out very complex assignments without detailed instructions; advise students individually or in groups on varied and complex matters; determine the appropriate course of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals and groups in personal interactions of a sensitive nature; reason logically and analyze and solve organizational and operating problems of one or several program areas; plan, coordinate and initiate actions necessary to implement administrative or group decisions or recommendations; analyze and define complex organizational, policy or procedural problems, collect and evaluate data, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; understand the roles and responsibilities of others and to gauge relationships accordingly by taking into account the variety of the interrelationships, motivations and goals of the members of the organization served; and establish and maintain effective, cooperative and harmonious working relationships in circumstances which involve the denial of requests or the necessity to persuade others to accept a different point of view.

Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the Experience requirements below.

Experience:
Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent to four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctorate degree in a job‑related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling.

Education:
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related.

Preferred Qualifications

Proven career counseling experience working with a diverse student body centering on historically minoritized and disenfranchised populations.

Environmental/Physical/Special

Extensive keyboarding and monitor use. Sitting up to 8 hours per day. Ability to lift 20 pounds. Occasional evening and weekend hours.
