Reporting to the HUIT Campus Systems Director of Technology, the Senior Business Systems Analyst serves as a solutions consultant and solution architect, offering expertise in designing and implementing a university-wide shipping platform and related solutions. This role is a key contributor on the Campus Systems team that supports, enhances and delivers services for the Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) organization at Harvard University.

As a solutions consultant, this role will build strong relationships with key stakeholders and will become well-versed in domestic and international shipping processes at Harvard in order to identify opportunities for technology solutions that increase the efficiency and effectiveness of these processes. Partnering with the Hazardous Materials Shipping business owner, as solutions architect, he/she will design and implement new applications, develop new functionality for existing applications based on business needs and requirements, update existing functionality to reflect changes in business processes, and identify opportunities for integrating these applications with Harvard’s other financial systems and reporting platforms.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Configures, implements and rolls out a university wide shipping platform to support regulatory and compliance requirements 

  • Partners with key stakeholders to analyze business process and technology needs 

  • Performs fit/gap analysis and conducts research to make objective recommendations for IT solutions that effectively capture and automate key business processes 

  • Drafts systems specifications detailing the logic, configuration and security requirements to be implemented 

  • Participates in appropriate QA activities to test system functionality and validate new products, enhancements, bug fixes, and patches 

  • Serves as an escalation point for Tier III support issues and root cause analysis 

  • Participates in team-wide Agile practices to maximize team collaboration and delivery of value to stakeholders: sprint planning, backlog grooming, retrospectives, daily standups and task board utilization 

  • Invests in applicable training and professional development efforts to ensure continuous learning and growth 

  • Manages multiple high priority initiatives in a fast-paced, highly technical environment 

  • Functions as a team lead and mentor to junior members of the team and serves as back-up to Technology Director

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • BA/BS degree in related field (e.g. management information science, computer science) or equivalent experience. 

  • 5-7 years’ experience in a business systems analysis or similar information technology role.  

  • At least 3 years experience implementing large scale technology solutions in a highly decentralized environment.  

  • Competency implementing SaaS solutions focused on domestic and international shipping is desirable. 

  • Proven ability to quickly assimilate new technology and/or applications required. 

  • Demonstrates adaptability, flexibility and the ability to get up to speed quickly in a decentralized business environment with complex enterprise applications. 

  • Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal, organization, analytical, and written and oral communication skills. 

  • Must have proven ability to initiate and manage multiple tasks under competing deadlines and shifting priorities. 

  • Able to work independently and within small and large teams. 

  • Demonstrated experience with Agile methodologies preferred. 

  • Advanced desktop application skills including Word, MS Project, Access, PowerPoint, and Visio required. 


Certificates and Licenses

  • Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses (or external equivalent) preferred

Working Conditions

  • Interview and onboarding activity for this position may be conducted via telephone & Zoom video conferencing, based on the department’s current presence on campus.

    This position will be based in Cambridge, MA. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, you will begin your work remotely. All remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA, CT, MA, MD, ME, NH, NY, RI, and VT). The fully remote nature of this job is only temporary. Once the University and your supervisor determine that it is appropriate, in person on-campus work will be required as a condition of continued employment.  

    HUIT is currently developing hybrid workplace models which will actively support some remote work (within a state in which Harvard is registered to do business) where business and team needs allow. Individual flexible and remote work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process.
