Description of Work Unit
The Division of Information Technology, the central IT organization for Colorado State University-Ft. Collins, supports the land-grant heritage of the institution as well as the university’s missions of teaching and learning, research, and service. The Division of IT is responsible for delivering enterprise and campus focused IT services for the Ft. Collins campus as well as throughout the CSU-System. Areas of responsibility include Enterprise Applications & Infrastructure, Cybersecurity & Privacy, Strategy & Planning, and Experience & Collaboration

Position Summary
This position will provide a vital service as a member of Division of IT’s (DoIT) Student Information Systems Team. This team supports the University’s mission-critical Student Information System (SIS). Colorado State University currently utilizes the Ellucian Banner SIS platform.
The Senior Business Systems Analyst will serve to provide SIS operational and project support. This entails engaging closely with SIS stakeholders to understand their business processes and how those processes are, or need to be, supported by the SIS and affiliated applications.
The Senior Analyst will contribute importantly to the DoIT SIS Team by developing deep understandings of functional business initiatives, needs, and issues which require IT support, and performing appropriate analysis and research to address them. The individual serving in this role will function as a key liaison to resolve the technology needs of stakeholder constituencies by proposing effective system and/or process solutions.
To carry out this objective, the Senior Analyst will need to understand SIS capabilities, integrations and data flows, the bounds between what is technically feasible or not, and the ability to exercise discretion regarding the practicalities of proposed solutions. The analyst must possess the technical proficiency to translate functional requirements into clear, complete technical proposals and specifications that will drive implementation of system changes by the team’s software development staff.
This position is eligible for hybrid work that includes some time in the Fort Collins, CO office.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree plus 7 or more years of experience performing functional business analysis duties
  • Strength in collaborating closely with users, stakeholders, and technical staff in large-scale software application environment
  • Experience evaluating stakeholder needs and designing application software solutions to support their business processes and objectives
  • Experience writing specifications to drive software development and modifications
  • Understanding of the SDLC (Software Development Life Cycle)
  • Understanding of common IT technology stack components
  • Proficiency in using SQL and navigating relational databases to profile data

  • Work closely with functional stakeholders such as the Registrar’s Office, Financial Aid, Admissions, and other student-facing departments to develop understanding of their business functions, current systems which support them, and gaps between the two that result in a need to add or enhance system features.
  • Collaborate with technical staff to ensure solid understanding of business cases, business rules and logic, and other implementation criteria needed to provide deliverables that are intuitive and efficient.
  • Apply both business and technical knowledge to serve as a liaison between stakeholders and IT staff.
  • Provide information to stakeholders regarding vendor-delivered, baseline system functionality they may not be aware of and may be able to utilize.
  • Where baseline application functionality is not sufficient, analyze stakeholder requirements to recommend and determine appropriate paths forward to meet stakeholder needs.

  • Develop thorough understanding of existing vendor-delivered SIS application, and CSU-specific elements associated with its operation, e.g. batch and real-time integrations, other closely related third-party applications, etc.
  • Engage in detailed fact-finding with additional functional and technical staff to acquire further perspective needed to develop specification documents that are appropriately comprehensive, to minimize the potential of scope creep, prevent excessive software development iterations, and drive implementation.
  • Maintain deep awareness of other IT disciplines and resources that may be required to support an implementation such as network, authentication, database, job scheduling, or other infrastructure components and ensure those considerations are included in architectural designs and specifications.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders and SIS Team to communicate objectives, scope, and implementation plans and status.
