The School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) is the largest academic unit at Rutgers University and the center of the undergraduate experience on the Rutgers–New Brunswick campus and is comprised of 41 academic departments spanning the liberal arts. Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Senior Business Manager for the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) – Dean’s Office.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Oversees the budgeting and financial administration of the School of Arts and Sciences. This involves complex financial planning and administration of all components of accounts (which includes: operating, designated, restricted, plant, endowed, and grant) for the SAS Dean’s Office, SAS Departments, Centers, Bureaus and Institutes with an annual operating budget of over $450 million.
  • Manages the fiscal resources of SAS, provides analysis and planning and leadership in the management of the RCM budget.
  • Researches and analyzes SAS teaching and enrollment data to prepare complex projections of tuition revenue not only for standard instruction, but also for online, off-campus, summer session, and winter session courses.
  • Develops, communicates, implements and enforces policies to meet the requirements of financial processes and to prepare necessary records and reports that safeguard assets and provide reliable financial information to a wide range of internal and external constituents including Chairs, SAS Deans, Central Offices and University Officials.
  • Makes significant contributions to planning strategies consistent with an understanding of the mission and vision of the University and comprehensive knowledge of the role, goals and objectives of SAS in the context of its structure, organization and operations.
  • Performs professional work requiring specialized knowledge and in-depth understanding, use and application of concepts, theories, principles, practices, terminology and applied bases of accounting, budgeting and budget management, project management, staff management, and general administrative principles and practices.
  • Acts as a liaison to ensure the integration of SAS Business activities with corresponding functions at the departmental and University levels.
  • Manages the SAS Office of Finance and Budget, which includes a professional staff of Associate Directors, Budget Analysts, a Training Manager, Business Managers at Grades 6 and 7, and a Grade 5 Department Administrator.
  • Establishes performance standards, conducts evaluations, and has the authority to hire and fire staff.
  • Reports to the SAS Vice Dean of Administration, and works closely with other Deans and Directors, the incumbent works independently to meet objectives with minimal supervision.

Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2024. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Flexible work arrangements are not permanent, are subject to change or cancellation and contingent on the employee receiving approval in the FlexWork@RU Application System. Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in business administration, finance, accounting or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates comprehensive knowledge and understanding of general accounting principles and practices.
  • Seven years of related professional experience in an accounting, financial or budgetary function with a leadership or managerial role of increasing responsibility.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver’s license would be required for this position.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Experience should demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of accounting, budgeting and financial functions, project management, administration, work organization, administrative and fiscal management and coordination of multiple demands.
  • Skills in planning and organizing, information integration, decision-making, and attaining results.
  • Must have excellent communication and organization skills, and be computer literate.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior related professional experience in a higher education institution or complex, multifaceted not for profit organization.
  • Familiarity with Rutgers University financial and data systems, as wellas related policies and procedures.
Equipment Utilized
  • RU Financial and Expense Management systems and Budget Planning tools, and SAS systems.
  • Tableau, MS Office applications including Expert MS Excel.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • A valid drivers license and use of a personal car are required to attend to business on all RU-NB campuses and occasional travel to other RU units, and out of state travel.
  • Ability to climb stairs.
  • Extended hours and weekend work may be required.
