The Computational Genomics Platform (CGP) team uses big data technologies to facilitate genomic research for global health issues such as breast cancer and other genetic risk factors. The team collaborates with many universities and institutes around the world. Examples of projects include supporting a global team to create the Human Cell Atlas, a compendium that maps gene activity in each cell in the human body, and the National Health Institute Data Commons project, which is about developing the technology to share and combine controlled access to genomic data across different institutes. JOB SUMMARY

Involves technical acumen for planning, designing, developing, implementing and administering data-based systems that acquire, prepare, store and provide access to data and metadata. Maintains and optimizes systems and migrates data and systems as needed. Ensures integrity and completeness of data and workflow, manages and / or develops data practices, databases and information systems as well as guidelines, dictionaries, registries and / or services. May include interpretation of scientific research data artifacts as well as mediation across science and technology domains and long-term data care. As information architect and data steward, designs systems, data products and / or data production processes while focusing on data curation, data exchange, data security, data integrity and information environments. (Re)evaluates frameworks, strategies, standards and standards-making activities. May involve work with a project-level data repository, a center or an archive.

 

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $90,530 - $105,000/year.  Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

40% - Data and Workflow Management

  • Utilizes and designs software tools to import moderately complex data and/or bioinformatic workflows from collaborators at external labs into databases.
  • Designs data models and data dictionaries.
  • Develops scripts for consistency, accuracy, and repeatability.
  • Researches relevant problem-domain literature and gives recommendations for algorithms, techniques, and statistical methodologies to develop workflows and conduct data analysis.
  • Works closely with lab personnel to upload data into databases and/or reformat bioinformatics pipelines into common workflow languages like CWL or WDL.

20% - Project and Technical Leadership

  • Serves as technical lead on one or more projects. Works with principal investigators, program and project managers, partner institutions, and other senior staff to support project planning and design process. Organizes project activities to achieve deliverables on schedule and within budget constraints.
  • Independently develops documentation for moderately complex small and medium-size projects.
  • Mentor other Bioinformatics Systems Analyst staff.

20% - Product Curation

  • Accurately captures and documents experimental methods at an appropriate technical level.
  • Assesses the needs of new features based on user feedback.
  • Advises developers on user features and layouts that emphasize ease of users to understand and find their workflows and data.
  • Reads relevant scientific papers and incorporates information into descriptions and verification.
  • Creates and maintains web pages associated with datasets and workflows.
  • Reviews work of junior staff.

20% - User Support and Outreach

  • Serves as UCSC contact for direct user support of software products and/or data coordination programs.
  • Designs training materials such as documentation, exercises, and tutorials covering diverse technical topics.
  • Presents training material in workshops, webinars, and at scientific conferences.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Experience either in a biomedical lab or with use of genomic sequencing workflows.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of modern biology and an applicable field of research.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of bioinformatics methods and data structures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of databases.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with large data sets.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively and diplomatically with both internal and external technical and non-technical personnel at various levels.
  • Ability to communicate technical information and scientific concepts in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to self-motivate, learn quickly, pay attention to detail and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of applications programming, scripting and web development (UNIX, R, or Python).

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of common workflow languages like CWL or WDL.
  • Basic project management skills.
  • Public speaking experience
  • Technical writing skills
  • Teaching or outreach experience, particularly developing and disseminating technical information to be accessible to broad audiences.

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • The selected candidate will be required to work a hybrid work schedule and must be able to work successfully from a home/remote office and fulfill the requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
