The Vice President of Health Sciences Advancement is proud to announce that the Keck School of Medicine (KSOM) is seeking a Senior Associate Vice President to support the school's Advancement program.

Job Summary:

Serves as a senior leader for Keck Medicine of USC Advancement working closely with the Vice President for Health Sciences Advancement and the Senior Associate Vice President for the Health Sciences Campaign. Fastidiously collaborates with Keck Medicine’s and university’s senior leaders, generating support for the school and health system’s missions and priorities. Partners with Senior Vice President for Health Affairs, the dean and health system CEO, Keck School of Medicine department chairs and institute directors to advance fundraising priorities. Works with vice president to liaise with department chairs, engaging them in fundraising and keeping them informed about progress, strategies, and process. This person plays a critical role in amplifying results in all giving sectors. Oversees a portfolio of high-level prospects and donors. Supervises gift officers supporting the pillars of Keck’s mission in patient care, medical education, research, community engagement. Works closely with SAVP for the Health Sciences Campaign to engage and deploy Keck Advancement staff and keep department chairs, center and institute leaders informed about the strategy, goals and progress of Keck Medicine’s fundraising in addition to updates on the health sciences campaign.

Essential job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assists in the development and implementation of the department's overall fundraising strategies. Works closely with all Keck Advancement staff, senior vice president for health affairs, Keck School of Medicine of USC dean and Keck Medicine and chief executive officer. Is a critical thinker, constantly looking at ways to improve how we work and questions status quo. Consults with aforementioned key constituents regarding strategies, obstacles, opportunities. Ensures health system and school priorities are given equal opportunity for support when applicable.

  • Oversees a portfolio of high-level prospects and donors. Identifies and develops strategic plans to cultivate, solicit and steward major and principal prospects

  • Partners with SAVP for the campaign to leverage Keck Medicine relationships and big ideas to maximize philanthropic support. Develop strategies to bring faculty across the university together. Keep Keck advancement staff excited about and connected to the campaign while focused on their respective areas of fundraising responsibility.

  • Manages program goals, plans, and objectives, including financial targets, reporting, prospect contact and activity, and other analyses to aid in fundraising success. Incorporates metrics into the “story” for the team’s performance and how its results impacts the school and health system.

  • Excels at small and large group presentations, conveying our work, progress, challenges, successes.

  • Responsible for fostering an environment that enhances communication and encourages collaboration between campaign staff, Keck Advancement, University Advancement, and other relevant departments and groups. Manages, leads, and motivates senior staff. Interviews, hires, trains, and supervises frontline gift officers, counseling and assessing performance, and determining discipline and salary administration.

  • Maintains awareness and knowledge of current changes within legal and regulatory environments, as well as university financial policies and procedures, to interpret applicable laws, rules and regulations which may affect advancement policies. Participates In professional meetings and conferences, and/or contributes to journals or publications, maintaining professional contacts and program visibility. Sets and communicates priorities and performance standards and assesses operations with said criteria. Provides quality assurance reviews, and addresses areas in need of attention.

Preferred Experience:

10-15 years of grateful patient frontline fundraising experience in medical/academic medical settings; at least five years of leading teams of 20+ gift officers to success, with the ability to delegate, coach, and manage while carrying a portfolio.


Preferred Qualifications:

Proficient experience in academic medicine. Demonstrated experience planning and executing development efforts in support of institutional and departmental strategies. Experience working with C-suite executives, leading senior volunteer boards, providing clear direction, goals, and timelines for success. Experience collaborating with prominent faculty, and a sophisticated understanding of university research units. Demonstrated track record of success securing major and principal gifts, leading teams to meet ambitious fundraising goals. Exemplary interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence for "cold calling," developing relationships with all types of students, staff, faculty, friends and alumni, and being particularly sensitive to diverse, sophisticated, high-net worth individuals and groups. Outstanding written and oral communication skills, and proven ability to communicate in a clear, consistent, transparent manner, to create shared goals and understanding. Demonstrated success in recruiting, retaining, and building diverse teams. Knowledge of human resources processes, with experience in mediation, negotiation, staff development, and leaching/training staff. Demonstrated experience developing communication plans, instructional materials, and related content, and with conducting In-person meetings. Lead/guidance skills, with the ability to manage, balance and prioritize different tasks and projects for various projects. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills. Knowledge of risk management and liability issues affecting higher education.
