Position Focus:

This executive role plays an important role in the university’s international activities and global strategy. Reporting to the Vice Provost for Global Strategy, the Senior Associate Provost for Global Strategy leads the Office of International Affairs, oversees the Office of International Students and Scholars and the highly successful Yale Young Global Scholars Program, and works with the Vice provost for Global Strategy and other campus leaders to develop and oversee Yale’s global strategy and operations.

Office of International Affairs:
Leads the Office of International Affairs (https://world.yale.edu/about/about-oia).  OIA is a university-wide resource that serves as the global liaison for all students, faculty, staff, and organizations involved in international activities and initiatives. OIA fosters connections within the Yale community and abroad, while further strengthening Yale’s position as a leading global university that is committed to improving the world. The Senior Associate Provost leads this work, identifying new strategies and tactics that realize the President’s and the Vice Provost for Global Strategy’s broad vision, while combining in-depth understanding of the needs and interests of Yale schools and faculty with the strengths and potential of partner institutions.  

This provostial position serves an appointed role for an initial 5-year term and is renewable upon review for further reappointment periods. The ideal candidate will play an important role across the university, and in representing it externally, with career growth over time. 


Essential Duties

1. Develop strategies and tactics that support international programs and initiatives and advance Yale’s reputation. 2. Lead OIA regional specialists to ensure they maintain comprehensive profiles of Yale in each target country, and maintain contacts with universities, governments, and other institution in priority countries, including regular overseas visits.3. Plan, support and often participate in international trips by the president, deans, and others.4. Organize and host foreign guests who are visiting Yale, including VIPs, university officials, and others.  Visits can include private meetings, public addresses, or large events in venues such as Woolsey or Sprague Halls and academic symposia.  5.Facilitate the international efforts of individual faculty, academic units, and administrative offices.  OIA collaborates with other offices at Yale on efforts to ensure compliance with Yale policies and US and foreign laws. The Senior Associate Provost co-chairs the university’s International Operations and Compliance Committee.6. Build awareness and understanding among Yale faculty and staff about international programs to constituents at Yale. Develop and maintain a deep understanding of the work and priorities of Yale faculty, the university’s policies, and historical context related to a program or activity.  7. Develop and steward internal and external relationships. Manage complex political relationships and interests.  Develop partnerships with internal and external individuals and organizations as needed.  8. Evaluate and assess potential and existing partners to ensure Yale’s interests are protected and the partnerships are appropriately mutually beneficial. 9. Remain informed on current events relating to higher education, government, and the healthcare sector and high-profile individuals.10. Advance and protect Yale’s reputation worldwide.  The OIA promotes Yale’s global impact with select world audiences and coordinates stories with the Office of Public Affairs and Communications (OPAC) and other campus communicators.  11. Organize leadership training programs involving Yale faculty. 12. Manage the President’s Council on International Activities.13. Manage the university response to international crises. Work with other offices to promote safe travel practices and awareness.  14. Work with Yale federal relations and others to provide input on university lobbying efforts.  15. Support the work of development and admissions functions across the university.  16. Ensure university policies are followed.  17. Represent Yale as needed at global events and with partner institutions, governments, and consortia.  The latter includes the International Alliance of Research Universities.  18. Oversee operation and reporting for Yale’s Wholly Foreign-Owned Enterprises (WFOEs) in China.


Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and 10 or more years of experience in a senior role in global strategy & administration in a major research or university program required.

Excellent interpersonal, management, writing, verbal communication and organizational skills.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Develop and steward internal and external relationships. Manage complex political relationships and interests.  Develop partnerships with internal and external individuals and organizations as needed.  


Required Skill/Ability 3:

The ability to lead significant and meaningful change in a large, complex organization. Proven skills as a change agent. Demonstrated operational management expertise and knowledge of the research administration offices and related work processes for which she/he will be responsible.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

An extensive track record of effective budget and financial management in a large and complex higher education research environment. Extensive knowledge of the laws, regulations, and policies related to research compliance such as protection of human participants, animal welfare, conflict of interest, intellectual property, research safety, research.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

JD, MD, PhD or equivalent advanced degree strongly preferred.
