The Office of Legal Affairs, under the direction of the Senior Vice President and General Counsel, provides legal representation and advice to the University and all of its constituent parts, including the Board of Trustees, the President, Provost, faculty and academic departments the Office of Research, the Office of Student Life, Human Resources, Advancement, Athletics, Public Safety, Business and Finance, and the Wexner Medical Center among many others. As one of the largest universities in the nation, Ohio State is a multifaceted institution, with a sophisticated and leading-edge legal practice that touches nearly every area of law, including litigation, labor and employment, public contracting, real estate and construction, intellectual property, research and technology transfer, business transactions, taxation and benefits, administrative law, health care law, public safety and criminal law matters, federal and state constitutional and public law issues, and more.

Working under the day-to-day direction of the Senior Associate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel, the Senior Associate General Counsel will provide legal advice and services relating to the university's research endeavors and clinical trials, including: providing advice and guidance to the Office of Research and its departments on matters to include human subject and animal research obligations, export control and foreign influence, research integrity and compliance; drafting, reviewing and advising on sponsored research contracts and grant agreements; assist with research misconduct investigations and matters; other duties as assigned. The Senior Associate General Counsel will serve as a key advisor to the Senior Vice President for Research on the practical aspects of applicable laws and associated risks to foster strategic thinking and decision making, as well as perform sophisticated legal research, investigations, and analysis with regard to academic research, risk management, governance, ethics, and other strategic initiatives. The Senior Associate General Counsel will provide high quality legal education and guidance to the Office of Research, its departments, and other non-attorney campus partners on emerging legal issues and research matters.

Required Qualifications

Juris Doctor (J.D.), graduate from an accredited law school and be a member of the Ohio bar or eligible to practice law in the State of Ohio within one year or less. Minimum eight (8) years of previous experience in some or all of the following fields: regulatory, statutory, and policy law; public entity law; government contracting; regulatory audits/investigations; responding to federal inquiries or subpoenas, as well as a working knowledge of research compliance and/or the life sciences.

The Target Hiring Range for this position is $146,000 to $195,000.
