Position Summary
Sr. Associate Director of Athletics will lead Washington University’s efforts to provide the campus community with recreational, educational programming and opportunities focusing on the wellness of the body, mind, and spirit. The Sr. Associate AD will oversee a professional and student staff and will bear ultimate responsibility for supervision and direction of assigned areas.
Specific to external operations, the Senior Associate Director of Athletics will assist with all elements of building a championship-caliber Division III athletics program and expanding the WashU brand nationally. This individual will lead the department of athletics in visionary marketing and communication strategies that continuously raise the awareness of WashU’s Athletics & Recreation Department in local, regional, and national headlines and contribute to building and retaining a highly qualified staff, strong pool of prospective-student-athletes, and campus.


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversees the departmental marketing, communication, and events for Athletics and Recreation. Provides strategic oversight of external and special events; social media and website presence for Athletics and Recreation; collaboration with campus and divisional staff to protect brand standards; revenue generation and increasing campus and community interests including ticket sales, online store sales, and contracts.
  • Develops and implements initiatives to increase student attendance and engagement at athletic events while working closely with campus partners. Implement community outreach programming to strategically develop support for athletic events.
  • Writes strategic plans and measure Key Performance Indicators for reach. Coordinates with event management, communications, and facilities staff to ensure that the fan experience is a priority at all fan-friendly athletic events.
  • Creates a unique in-game fan experiences that adds value to patrons in attendance while creating a home-field advantage for student-athletes. Plans, directs and executes game production efforts including music/band, promotions, cheer/dance/mascot, halftime acts, national anthem performers, and serve as point person for special recognition. Supervises department’s cheer, mascot, and band programs.
  • Develops, implements, and leads daily operations, including budget planning and oversight, of assigned areas.
  • Hires, supervises, and evaluates members of a professional staff with responsibilities that could include, but not be limited to, facilities, campus community recreation and fitness, intramural and club sports, and community marketing and outreach.
  • On an annual basis provides counsel and guidance to coaches, staff members, and student athletes in varsity sports, assigned by the Director of Athletics.
  • May serve as the coordinator for assigned competitions, including serving as NCAA liaison, coordinating travel, management of hosting home games and ensuring a consistency and equity across all sports related to the student athlete experience.
  • Serves on the Departmental senior leadership team, including, but not limited to, contributing to the development of a long-term vision for the department.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Eight years of progressive administrative experience.
  • Experience designing, constructing, operating, and maintaining fitness facilities, preferably in an on-campus setting.
  • Experience with diverse and comprehensive intramural and club sports programs at an institution of higher learning.
  • Collegiate Athletics management experience.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills.
  • Strong judgment and risk management skills.
  • Demonstrated competency in helping to meet program objectives, working independently, supervising others, and helping to establish program priorities.
  • An ability to communicate with and interact positively with students, faculty, staff, and the broader university community.
  • Fluency in use of computers, technology, and social media.
  • The ability to develop a safe, functional, and welcoming working environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in recreation, sports management, physical education, or a related field.
  • Five years of progressive administrative experience, including staff supervision and budget preparation and accountability or Master’s degree in recreation, sports management, physical education, or a related field and three years of progressive administrative experience, including staff supervision and budget preparation and accountability.
  • Professional experience in higher education.

Salary Range
$75,400.00 - $132,800.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
