Position Summary Information


Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Campus Recreation provides a diverse and intentional recreational program in a safe, inclusive, and accessible environment which enhances the social, mental, and physical well-being of the entire University community. With this mission as the focus, Campus Recreation’s program offerings include intramural sports, aquatics, sport clubs, fitness and wellness, expeditions, challenge course, open recreation, special events, climbing sports, adaptive sports, and well-being outreach.
Position Summary
This position is located in the Campus Recreation Department within the College of Arts and Sciences. The Senior Assistant Director for Facilities and Operations provides daily leadership and oversight for all indoor and outdoor Campus Recreation facilities including the Student Recreation Center, Rams Head Recreation Center, Woollen Gym, Hooker Fields, the North Campus Recreation Complex, and the South Campus Recreation Complex. The position is responsible for supervising a full-time Facility Operations Coordinator and coordinating the development and implementation of policies, standard operating procedures, emergency action procedures, and risk management and safety practices. A primary operations responsibility is working with Housekeeping Services, Grounds Services and Facilities Services to maintain and upkeep indoor and outdoor recreation facilities.
This position also provides leadership and oversight to all special events, sport camps, short-term and long-term facility reservations, and rentals. Responsibilities include developing and updating space allocation and reservation priorities for all types of user groups and creating and evaluating annual rental fee structures for spaces and equipment. The position supervises a full-time Member Services and Events Coordinator, and together they manage all user agreements, contracts, payments, and rental policies for facility reservations and groups.
In addition to supervising two full-time personnel, this position hires, trains, and supervises between 15-30 student site managers for Campus Recreation indoor facilities. The Senior Assistant Director develops annual budgets for areas of responsibility, coordinates the purchase and inventory of shared equipment and staff supplies, and oversees revenue generation for facility rentals and summer camps.
The position reports to the Associate Director of Facilities and Operations and assumes responsibility for Campus Recreation facilities and operations in the absence of the Associate Director.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
* Professional experience working in facilities and operations management.
* Exceptional organizational and customer service skills.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate with large and diverse audiences in addition to one-on-one encounters.
* Ability and willingness to collaborate effectively with a goal-oriented team.
* Current certifications in CPR, First Aid, and AED or the ability to obtain within six months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
* Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Exercise and Sports Science, Physical Education, Sports Management, or related field, or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be from an appropriately accredited institution.
* Master’s degree in Recreation, Exercise and Sports Science, Physical Education, Sports Management, or related field. All degrees must be from an appropriately accredited institution.
* At least three years of professional experience in recreation facility operations, event management, and staff supervision.
* At least two years of professional experience with facility scheduling and scheduling software such as Fusion.
* Ability to supervise multiple full-time professional staff.
Required Licenses/Certifications
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
* Weekend and evening work may be required.
* Ability to move up to 50 lbs.
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
