Position Summary
The Senior Assistant Dean has responsibility for oversight, implementation, and management for the Student Support functional area of Engineering Undergraduate Student Services (EUSS) within the McKelvey School of Engineering. The Senior Assistant Dean also provides comprehensive academic advising to undergraduate students and contributes to the vision for programs and events that enhance the academic mission of McKelvey and guide students from first-year through graduation.
The mission of the Student Support function within EUSS is to provide special assistance to students to increase their ability to succeed in engineering degree programs. Support services are offered to all engineering students, and special attention is focused on first-generation, PELL, and under served students. The ideal candidate for this position will have a depth and range of experiences and a successful track record that demonstrates a keen ability to implement programming that measurably increases student academic success. A team of FTE's directly report to the Senior Assistant Dean.
In the absence of the Associate Dean in EUSS, the Senior Assistant Dean becomes responsible for all EUSS office operations. McKelvey has approximately 1,700 students earning undergraduate engineering degrees. Engineering undergraduate academic affairs is housed within EUSS and includes these functional areas: four-year advising; student on-boarding (e.g., orientation); first-year experiences; student degree progress tracking; academic success and support initiatives; special attention focused on affinity populations; admissions related activities, presentations, and events to attract and yield first-year, transfer, and dual degree students; support engineering student groups, provide leadership training, and coordination across groups; mentoring experiences with alums and industry representatives; special events (e.g., award ceremonies, commencement recognition ceremonies); academic policies and administration; student record maintenance; transfer credit; degree clearance; data reporting; accreditation support activities; publications; coordination with multiple entities across the university; community outreach activities; and post-graduate and pre-professional planning. EUSS impacts student enrollments, retention, and their attitudes of being supported by the university. EUSS also impacts the school by assisting faculty and departmental admin staff, leaving more time for faculty to focus on research and teaching.


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Leads the Student Support functional area with formal supervision duties of Academic Advisors and Assistant Deans of Advising.

  • Assumes responsibility for individual programs within a functional area, including the development, coordination, execution, maintenance, and assessment of assigned program(s).
  • Makes decisions regarding annual implementation processes of assigned program(s).
  • Oversees all programs within that functional area ensuring alignment with the strategic vision for EUSS and McKelvey.
  • Collaborates with senior leadership in EUSS, McKelvey and direct reports to set the direction and goals for programs within the functional area.
  • Brings a vision for the functional area and serve as a critical thought partner for direct reports in shaping program development.
  • Assists direct reports with program implementation and assessment.
  • Evaluates the impact of the programs within the functional area and communicate with the Associate Dean of EUSS on outcomes and areas for strategic development.
  • Works closely with colleagues in EUSS on cross-cutting projects to ensure a holistic student academic experience.
  • Works with the Associate Dean of EUSS and other colleagues to ensure the priorities for diversity, equity, and inclusion in EUSS are embedded in all functional area activities, programs, and events.
  • In consultation with the Associate Dean of EUSS, provide training, development, motivation, and supervision of direct reports including employee performance review and maintenance of staffing plans.

Serves as a four-year academic advisor for undergraduate students in each class. The load of advisees is approximately 45% of a full-time advising load.

  • Provides academic advising to support student retention and graduation initiatives.
  • Interprets and explains university policies, procedures, and curriculum to students, faculty, staff, and administration.
  • Identifies and helps resolve obstacles impeding the academic success of students.
  • Analyzes students’ academic and personal issues or concerns and provide referral or intervention services.
  • Supports students in developing a required academic plan to meet graduation requirements.
  • Coordinates mentoring or specific programming for students within various academic programs.
  • Guides students through college and university level administrative processes.
  • Liaises with McKelvey departments and programs to ensure a holistic student academic experience.
  • Works with campus partners to ensure holistic support and tracking of student progress.
  • Maintains appropriate student records and documents student interactions.

Specialized Efforts Critical for Mission Success and Expansion

  • Serves as the EUSS point of contact and liaison for Joint Degree Programs, such as the Business + Computer Science (BUCS) degree program. This effort will require communication, coordination, and negotiation with McKelvey academic department leadership and academic department leaders located across WashU.
  • Leads the effort in EUSS to ensure course assistants (CA’s, AI’s, TA’s) within McKelvey academic departments receive the necessary training to be successful in their significant roles. This effort will require communication and coordination with McKelvey academic department leadership, the Provost Office, and the Teaching Center.
  • Leads the effort to identify and create general programming help new students have a successful first-year experience within McKelvey. This might mean revamping our current first-year seminar course, or creating something brand new.

Admissions

  • Assists with admissions efforts related to undergraduate recruitment.
  • Prospective First-Year students: Helps recruit new first-year students by giving general engineering information sessions and meeting one-on-one with visiting families.
  • Prospective Dual Degree students: Helps recruit dual degree students by visiting key affiliated liberal arts schools throughout the US (one to three weeks each year). Advises dual degree engineering students regarding admission requirements, financial assistance, housing, and orientation programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree.
  • Previous experience advising students in an educational or academic setting.
  • Significant knowledge of student academic affairs programs and events, a broad understanding of curricula and of concepts, practices, and procedures related to undergraduate education, and the ability to interact with various campus partners.
  • Sound judgment, decision making ability, and high-level maturity in sensitive and confidential situations involving students, staff, and parents.
  • Proven interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal. Audiences should include students, faculty, staff, and stakeholders.
  • A strong commitment to cultivating relationships with students in the context of a learning environment and to designing and delivering excellent academic and student affairs.
  • Ability to build relationships, credibility, and consensus among diverse populations of students, staff, and faculty.
  • Ability to successfully manage complex operations and supervise staff at various levels, including organizing and coaching diverse individuals.
  • Ability to step in as a strong individual contributor and team member on various projects as needed.
  • Ability to anticipate issues, properly assess pertinent data, and develop and implement practical solutions to complex issues.
  • High degree of self-motivation, organization, accuracy, and productivity with an ability to manage time, set and meet deadlines, and follow-through on projects independently and in a timely manner with varying degrees of pressure.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and seven years of relevant experience in higher education setting or Master’s degree and five years of relevant experience in higher education setting.

Salary Range
$68,200.00 - $116,600.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
