Summary

Archives and Special Collections, a department of the Monsignor William Barry Memorial Library, is committed to collecting, preserving, and providing access to primary source materials that support the research needs of the Barry University community and beyond.

The Senior Archives & Special Collections Librarian will lead the development of a program that is innovative, service-oriented forward-looking position will be visible on campus and actively engaged with students, faculty, staff, and other members of the Barry University community.


Essential Functions

  • Promote and provide curriculum integration support, research assistance, and information literacy instruction for students and courses utilizing primary sources, archives, and special collections.

  • Creates "finding aids" using best practices and standards including DACS and EAD for online patron research.

Facilitate discovery and access to collection information

  • Utilizes best practices for the development of EAD finding aids, the library integration management system (ILS), the library website, and other avenues.

  • Creates, enhances, and maintains metadata for digital objects, adhering to recognized standards such as EAD, Dublin Core, and MODS, ensuring comprehensive and accurate metadata, and improving discoverability and accessibility of repository content.

  • Promotes the availability and capacity of the University Archives to the Barry University community, faculty, researchers, and students.

  • Collects, organizes, and digitally archives research, scholarly works, and other university content within the Data Repository.

  • Supports archival research through information literacy instruction, programs, and initiatives, including training on data management practices, file organization, metadata creation, and data documentation.

  • Provides consultations, workshops, and guides to educate users about repository functions, content submission procedures, and access.

  • Collaborates on library-wide strategies for long-term preservation of archives and digital materials.

  • Implements basic preservation and conservation methods to extend the life of physical and digital materials.

  • In collaboration with the Associate Director of Library Services, the Senior Archives & Special Collections Librarian supports the research needs of donors of archival and special collections materials both internal and external to the organization, including providing consultation in recommending collection additions and identifying curation and preservation concerns;

  • Works with the Associate Director of Library Services in the development and implementation of policies and standards relevant to access and discovery in archives and special collections as needed.  


Qualifications/Requirements

  • A Master's degree in Library Science or a related degree from an ALA accredited institution is required.

  • Demonstrated experience in a technology-related field with two (2) years of experience in systems administration; OR five (5) years of experience in systems administration; OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

  • Must have technical skills with MS Office applications and digital materials

  • Must have excellent communication skills, written and oral.

  • Professional demeanor, data entry, attention to detail, and time management skills
