Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Office of Admissions’ primary goal is to recruit, admit, and enroll students who will thrive within our collegiate community. This unit oversees the entire process, from recruitment to enrollment.
Regular interaction and contact with the public, including professionals in all disciplines of the university, is involved. These interactions require an accurate knowledge of relaying Admissions policies and procedures set forth by the University and the Office of Admissions. Our office is actively engaged in diverse activities aimed at promoting and facilitating the wide array of programs, activities, and opportunities available at UNCW. Through these efforts, we seek to effectively communicate the university’s offerings to prospective students and the broader community.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Senior Admissions Counselor is a vital member of the Admissions team and diligently works to recruit and enroll students from Raleigh, NC, and the surrounding area who will perform successfully in the UNCW collegiate community.
This position has daily, continual contact with internal and external constituents. This position must be knowledgeable of all Admissions policies and procedures set forth by the University and the Office of Admissions, and be able to articulate that knowledge to students, parents, high school counselors, faculty, and others who have inquiries about Admissions. The position is highly involved in a wide range of admissions activities/events/programs for prospective students from Raleigh, NC, and the surrounding area designed to publicize and describe the opportunities available to students who attend UNCW. The position requires extensive travel in Raleigh, NC, and surrounding areas to attract qualified candidates and meet established goals to increase enrollment at UNCW.
The Senior Admissions Counselor must have a strong ability to work independently, be self-motivated, and operate with a sense of urgency and attention to goal attainment when managing the day-to-day Admissions activities and priorities of the position.
The main job functions include the following:
  • Evaluates First-Year applications for admission
  • Meets and communicates effectively with students, parents, high school counselors, alumni & student volunteers and faculty
  • Represents UNCW in college fairs and in the community
  • Applies related policies and regulations of the UNC System, UNCW, and the Office of Admissions
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred education, professional skills and experience
  • Previous experience in a post-secondary admissions office
  • Ability to plan and coordinate events 
  • Ability to represent the department in a professional and conscientious manner; use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of situations and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems
  • Ability to maintain high quality/standards of work, leadership, ethics, commitment, professional responsibility, and judgment
  • Ability to travel in- and out-of-state
  • Ability to actively seek input to identify best practices and set the direction for the position to achieve organizational goals
  • Ability to develop new, innovative approaches to address and improve current and future programs
  • Ability to develop multifaceted reports for use in a variety of areas; ability to utilize and interpret data related to their regional territory and department
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team, set priorities, achieve goals and coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time sensitive deadlines
  • Clear understanding that they will have the autonomy over the review of admissions applications; must review a high volume of applications in a timely manner and meet deadlines
  • Sensitivity to the needs of diverse groups of students and a commitment to a diverse student body
  • Ability to facilitate and foster positive communication and collaboration; work as part of a team to achieve common goals
  • Strong public speaking skills; with excellent presentation and communication skills to articulate and present ideas and concepts in writing, social media and presentation formats
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency with various computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, online systems, Internet, and online calendaring and email
  • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures
  • Strong ability to attend to details with a high degree of accuracy
  • Ability to maintain a valid NC Driver’s license
  • Ability to exercise and maintain a high level of confidentiality in accordance with policy and applicable state, federal and local laws (i.e. FERPA-Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act)
