Senior Accountant
Primary Purpose:
Under the general supervision of the Director, Business & Accounting, is responsible for financial reporting, internal controls, and confidentiality.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for performing all monthly and year-end reconciliations and journal entries as well as performing monthly bank reconciliations.
  • Obtain and maintain a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure.
  • Assist the Director, Business & Accounting with the development and implementation of department policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Perform and maintain oversight of a wide variety of accounts activities and reporting to include:
    • Maintain and balance subsidiary accounts by verifying, allocating, posting, reconciling
    • transactions and resolving discrepancies.
    • Monitor balances in designated fund indices, student account indices, and gift indices
    • Analyze and monitor transactions to ensure proper accounting standards.
    • Prepares and records asset, liability, revenue, and expenses entries by compiling and
    • analyzing account information.
    • Assist with year-end close reporting such as annual report of UBIT and
    • miscellaneous revenue.
    • Prepare monthly management reports and accompanying schedules and worksheets;
    • prepare budget reports for department chairs, directors, and managers as requested.
    • Document policies, procedures and workflow for assigned areas of responsibility.
    • Reviews accounting documents to ensure accuracy of information and calculations.

  • Advise Cashiering Supervisor on resolution of various issues with banks such as cleared check differences, bank fee anomalies, etc.
  • Perform reviews of accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash, and capital assets; assist in documentation and monitoring of internal controls; assist external and internal auditors during audits as necessary.
  • Establish solid and professional working relationships with internal and external constituencies to include Development/Advancement, Dental Clinics, Stockton and Sacramento Campuses, and the City and County of San Francisco.
  • Coordinate, monitor and reconcile accounting activities with internal and external constituencies to include recording of gifts-in-kind; fundraising event accounts, parking taxes and obtaining certificates of authority.
  • Provide input to department goal setting; review accounting system and procedures and recommend modifications and improvements.
  • Remain current on accounting best practice through participation in educational opportunities, professional organizations, and professional publications.
  • Assist the Director, Business & Accounting, with the oversight and management of capital assets within the San Francisco campus including conducting annual physical inventory.
  • Provide supervision for the other members of the Business and Accounting staff in the absence of the Director, Business & Accounting.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Director, Business & Accounting.

Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge of:
  • Advanced knowledge of GAAP.
  • Advanced accounting reconciliation skills and financial reporting skills within GAAP.
  • Advanced analytical and research skills.
  • MS-Office applications with advanced Excel skills.

  • Work independently and take on new tasks with high level of difficulty and take ownership of his or her work product.

Experience:
  • Minimum of five years of experience in an accounting position role.

Education:
  • Bachelors degree in accounting or equivalent.

Working Conditions:
  • Position is full-time, eight hours per day, five days per week.
  • Additional time may be required to meet business needs or deadlines.
  • Occasional travel to off-site meetings, training or conferences.

Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of:
  • Non-profit fund accounting desirable.
  • BANNER software experience desirable.


Experience:
  • Experience in higher education accounting department desirable.
  • Accounting System conversion and process change experience a strong plus.

Education:
  • Masters degree in accounting, Master s degree in business administration or CPA highly preferred.

Other:
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university
  • setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Hiring Range: $84,497.25 - $132,025.55 per year. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidates qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
