Overview: 

We are seeking a Senior Accelerator Facility Safety Engineer who will focus on performing, documenting, and maintaining technical safety documentation for ORNL accelerator facilities.  This position resides in the Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division in the Environment, Safety, Health, and Quality Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  As a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national laboratory, ORNL has an extraordinary 80-year history of solving the nation’s biggest problems. As part of our team, you will become an expert on the Accelerator Safety Order, DOE O 420.2D and accelerator technology and operations. You will interact with engineers and accelerator system operators to understand and evaluate accelerator specific hazards associated with current operations and planned upgrades and modifications, identify and develop controls to mitigate hazards, and interface with the Department of Energy to document and implement the controls necessary to ensure safe operation of the accelerator.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Perform, document, and maintain technical safety analyses supporting new and existing ORNL accelerator facilities, major accelerator upgrade projects and facility modifications.
  • Maintain accelerator safety documentation including Safety Assessment Documents and Accelerator Safety Envelopes, revising and updating as needed while ensuring compliance with associated requirements.
  • Implement the Unreviewed Safety Issue Process to evaluate proposed facility modifications, new activities or discovered conditions to determine if associated accelerator specific hazards are appropriately addressed by existing safety analyses.
  • Provide accelerator facility support as needed and in response to emerging issues to support safe operations and in support of mission needs including minimization of operational downtime due to accelerator safety related issues.
  • Cooridnate with facility operations staff and local DOE Site Office to assist in the development and implementation of safety bases, analysis of policies, practices and procedures.
  • Support accelerator safety related training for System Engineers responsible for safety related Credited Engineered Controls.
  • Maintain effective communications and interface with System Engineers responsible for safety related Credited Engineered Controls.
  • Provide safety analysis support to researchers and facility management organizations associated with accelerator facilities operated at or below 10 MeV.
  • Evaluate modifications, experiments, operations, and safety basis documentation in coordination with the ORNL independent safety review programs.
  • Rigorously maintain documentation and records in approved document management system.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in  Engineering or related science degree in a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in relevant operations or technical support experience at a DOE accelerator facility, nuclear navy, or other high-rigor field such as nuclear pharmacy, medical devices, aviation safety, commercial nuclear, chemical process safety, spaceflight, missile systems, etc.
  • Understanding and basic application of radiological safety and health physics principles including shielding and radiological dose assessments.
  • Understanding and application of basic engineering principles.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply hazard analysis techniques.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to author technical documents.
  • Proficient in application of standard workplace personal computer applications.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Post-graduate degree in Nuclear Engineering or related engineering or scientific discipline.
  • Accelerator safety related experience at DOE accelerator facility with demonstrated familiarity with DOE accelerator safety requirements.
  • Significant experience in application of shielding and radiological dose assessments.
  • Significant experience in performing hazard analyses.
  • Basic understanding of radiation and/or neutron transport.
  • Nuclear Navy experience.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

 

Special Requirements:

  • Export control, no clearance:  This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
  • Visa Sponsorship:  Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
