Department Summary
The College of Science at the University of North Texas consists of the Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics and the interdisciplinary programs Teach North Texas, BioDiscovery Institute, Advanced Environmental Research Institute, and Interdisciplinary Program in Applied and Computational Science. The college offers Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD degrees in science and mathematics, currently serving more than 4,000 majors. Position Overview
The College of Science Advising Center at the University of North Texas is seeking to hire a Senior Academic Advisor to join our team. Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
  • Provide advanced academic and career advising services to students in the College of Science in a timely and professional manner, including communicating accurate degree, program, and University requirements to students and other advisors; preparing and updating student records using advising technology; processing transcript evaluations (including identifying applicability of transfer credits), degree plan audits, and graduation applications; assisting students with developing a course schedule each semester and throughout their college career; and partner effectively with campus resources to make appropriate referrals.
  • Serve as a lead advisor in the College of Science Advising Center and train/supervise/mentor advisors, ensure the Advising Center maintains daily advisor coverage, and participate in developing and implementing strategies that promote efficiency, productivity, and goodwill within the office.
  • Work with supervisor and other senior advising team leads to develop and implement retention and advising strategies related to science students, particularly with regard to college engagement, student success, retention, and persistence, timely graduation, and career development.
  • Serve as retention/continuing student experience lead, including updating degree audit lists, communicating policies to advisors, assisting advisors with questions related to degree audits and student records, reviewing and escalating requests for exceptions to graduation policies. Develop, deliver, and assess advisor-training and student programming related to retention and graduation planning, processes, and outcomes.
  • Confer with faculty or administrators with regard to academic policy issues, such as acceptable course substitutions or waivers for a particular degree.
  • Assists with recruitment, retention, and graduation exercises and participate in College/University special events, including New Student Orientation, Preview Day, College Day, Dean’s List Reception, and Commencement among others. May include some travel to/from special events.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and four years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, or professional academic advising.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Strong presentation, problem solving, and conflict resolution skills.
• Advanced academic advising expertise.
• Ability to integrate and analyze information and develop reports.
• Ability to use a variety of complex computer applications.
• Ability to effectively manage projects and work teams.
• Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing with internal and external groups in a variety of settings.
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
• Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).

Preferred Qualifications
Experience working as an academic advisor.
Required License / Registration / Certification
Work Schedule
M-F, 8am-5pm with some weekend/evenings required due to special events and peak advising periods. Must also be able to travel to the UNT Frisco campus periodically for special events and New Student Orientation.

Job Duties


o
Performs accurate advising work in the College of Science regarding individual degree requirements and relevant academic policies for specified and targeted undergraduate populations.
o
Maintains, updates, and edits degree audits and other student records through the university systems and advising technology, including graduation applications.
o
Confers with faculty and/or administrators with regard to transferability of credit and academic policy issues.
o
Documents advising appointments and student interactions in the advising software and provides timely follow up with students, as needed.
o
Counsels students, as necessary, on best degree and career matches, college transition challenges, and other issues related to overall student success.
o
Manages programs and initiatives to increase student persistence and graduation rates.
o
Direct special programs at the college and university level such as orientation, commencement, recruitment events, and other activities.
o
Builds and maintains strong relationships with on and off campus partners to improve student service.
o
Effectively lead, mentor, and develop professional advisors through a formal supervisory role, ensuring adequate office coverage, and the development of strategies that promote advisor efficiency, productivity, and positive team engagement.
o
Analyze data and prepare reports and updates on managed projects, programs, and other metrics that better inform the office about student success.
o
Develop, deliver, and assess advisor-training and student programming related to academic planning, processes, and outcomes.
o
Promotes good will and quality customer service to students and is effective in handling a variety of student situations.
o
Maintains cordial and professional attitude within office, college, university, and community.
