Create an open, respectful, and inclusive environment by utilizing an equity-minded, student-centered practice that emphasizes mutual respect, dignity, self-awareness, and authenticity. Center the student in an asset framed approach where advising differentiates educational guidance to meet students where they are and acknowledges the critical value of each student’s unique social capital. Empower students to be active responsible learners and assist them in making well-informed decisions. Guide students in course selection and the process for registering for courses. Identify campus activities, and programs opportunities related to students' major. Maintain a consistent pattern of contact and communications with assigned students. Use data to provide timely outreach to students on their academic progress and conduct audits on student’s degree progress. Assess when a student’s situation requires referral to campus resources. Maintain and ensure confidentiality of student records. Teach students about the university’s structure, systems, policies, and practices.

 

In addition to advising responsibilities, Senior Academic Advisors will also assist in development and implementation of department-level advisor training, serve on university-level committees, and serve as academic liaisons to a variety of departments and programs. Senior advisors will also coordinate major projects, programs, and initiatives that support the mission of their advising unit, their college, and the university related to advising.

 

Who We Are: 
The Veterinary Nursing (VN) program is the #1 Veterinary Technician program in the nation and is one of only four Veterinary Nursing programs in the country affiliated with a College of Veterinary Medicine. The mission of the Veterinary Nursing Program at Purdue University is to serve the veterinary profession and the public by providing practice ready veterinary technician/technologist (nursing) graduates of the highest caliber and ability. The program is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and is a science-based program offering a Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Nursing (BSVN) degree and an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree. The residential VN program is competitive with a maximum cohort size of 36 students. The Senior Academic Advisor for the residential program will have the opportunity to interact with students in a variety of ways, including in the classroom as a co/leader of the incoming student learning community, leading and coordinating student success initiatives, and collaborating with faculty and staff on student retention efforts. 


What We're Looking For:

Required:

  • Master's degree in a field relevant to the position.
  • 3 years of relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and administer academic policy when necessary. 
  • Ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, current and prospective students, parents, and families.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills, ability to multi-task, establish priorities, and resolve conflict.  
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of undergraduate student development and recruitment.
  • Knowledge of programs and majors at Purdue University and field related to major advised.
