We are hiring immediately for a Senior Academic Advisor to join the UTHealth Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in Houston, TX 77030. This position will be an integral part of the graduate school Dean's office, directly advising Ph.D. students and working collaboratively with the Office of Academic Affairs to foster student success. The ideal candidate for this position will have some experience in a biomedical sciences lab.

Position Summary:

The Senior Academic Advisor is responsible for taking a lead role in student achievement including academic advising, tracking of student milestones, management of administrative processes, communications to students on academic matters, and the organization of academic events.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Advises students on academic policies and requirements, course selection, and the selection of thesis/dissertation mentors. 
  • Monitors student achievement and the timely accomplishment of all degree milestones. 
  • Proactively resolves issues; provides and/or identifies appropriate resource persons to provide support services for students as needs emerge.
  • Guides and supports faculty and staff at the graduate schools two parent institutions regarding academic advising policies and procedures. 
  • Participates in group decision-making and evaluation of processes by integrating strategic problem-solving techniques with historical data. 
  • Implements methods of collection, entry, and management of academic data, as well as administrative processes. 
  • Aids in the development and evaluation of academic advising policies and procedures. 
  • Supports courses that form the core requirements of degree programs and events for the Office of Academic Affairs. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Certifications/Skills:

  • A graduate degree in biomedical sciences (MS or PhD) is strongly preferred, or significant work experience that is relevant to the job duties in lieu of a graduate degree. Strong organizational and computer skills, including Microsoft Office. Strong interpersonal skills and professional demeanor.

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree required.  Master's degree or PhD preferred. 

Minimum Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree with three (3) years of related experience or two (2) years of related experience with an advanced degree. Two (2) years of experience directly related to the field of academic study required. Six (6) months experience in advising or Student Affairs in a University setting preferred preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.

Residency Requirement:

Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
