Job Description
ECU Department of Academic Affairs – BSOM is currently seeking to hire multiple Peer Tutors for Spring and Summer terms.
Responsibilities:
As a tutor, it is your responsibility to encourage and assist any tutee you may be helping. Additionally, you need to ensure that students academic needs are being met. Tutors are expected to maintain a professional work ethic, demeanor, and appearance while tutoring. Tutors are expected to perform a variety of functions. In addition to facilitating tutoring sessions, tutors may research and devise handouts and workshops regarding the subject matter they tutor as well as study methods.
Other responsibilities include:
• Leading weekly one-on-one or small group sessions that fit the needs of the student
• Reviewing classroom materials and assignments
• Discuss questions, help students understand key concepts discussed in the classroom
• Sharing skills to improve academic performance, including study strategies, note-taking skills and approaches to answering test questions.
• Assisting students with test preparation, papers and other academic tasks
• Identify areas of improvement in study skills and help set goals for exam preparation
• Providing students positive and constructive feedback
• It is important to note that tutoring services are designed to be a supplement to – not a replacement for – classroom instruction and tutors are expected to:
• Complete Tutor training provided by OSSAW
• Prepare appropriately for tutoring sessions
• Conduct tutoring services either in person, video conference, phone, or email. (Tutors are expected to observe all COVID-19 safety precautions set forth by the CDC, ECU, BSOM)
• Record all worked hours in Kronos and to do so in a timely manner
• Meet with students being tutored regularly
• Provide feedback to OSSAW about tutoring sessions with students
• Notify OSSAW of any changes in tutoring availability or any concerns about individual students being tutored.
Skills – Tutors use a variety of skills and academic knowledge to provide the most comprehensive help possible. Skills may include:
• Thorough knowledge of the academic subject or expertise in test preparation
• Strong verbal and written communication skills to clearly explain challenging concepts, provide instruction and deliver feedback
• Ability to motivate and encourage students to improve their academic performance
• Creativity and flexibility in order to personalize their learning approach for individual student
• Patience and compassion for students as they develop skills and improve their performance
Preferred (Majors, Experience, GPA, etc.)
Previous demonstrated excellence in the academic subject they plan to tutor in.
