Position Summary:
Adventure Leadership is seeking individuals for the climbing wall, rentals, adventure trips, and all challenge course programs (field games, low initiatives, Alpine tower, Odyssey Course, Zip Line). Staff will need to communicate effectively with other staff members and participants, complete appropriate paperwork, assist participants safely though programs, market programs across campus, belay participants indoors and outdoors, attend paid and unpaid trainings while also performing other duties as assigned. Adventure Leadership staff will also enjoy a challenging, fun, and rewarding work environment where they are able to improve on their leadership abilities while helping others to do the same.
Responsibilities and Duties:
1. Report to work on time according to schedule.
2. Adapt to any issues and effectively communicate these issues with the necessary personnel.
3. Attend all required trainings and mandatory staff meetings.
4. Open to realistically developing one’s own knowledge, performance, and abilities through their supervisor’s evaluations and their own self-reflection.
5. Able to comfortably work outdoors in varied weather conditions.
6. Act as a role model and leader within the program and directly train and assist in mentoring new staff.
7. Review the employee manual to be able to effectively remedy situations while mentally referencing policies, operations, and situations that adhere to everyday functions within Campus Recreation & Wellness.
8. Knowledge of other Campus Recreation and Wellness program areas is necessary.
9. Uphold the integrity and reputation of the Adventure Leadership program, Campus Rec and Wellness, and East Carolina University by providing exemplary customer service to students, staff, and patrons.
Adventure Program Center Responsibilities and Duties:
1. Answer telephones and interact with walk in customers to assist them with any questions, concerns, or problems when possible.
2. Load boats onto vehicles for participants for program use.
3. Assist participant and trip staff with equipment selection.
4. Belay and assist participants at climbing wall.
5. Handle point of sales while using great customer service.
Challenge Course Program Responsibilities and Duties:
1. Lead groups safely and effectively through field games, low ropes course tasks, alpine tower, and odyssey course.
2. Properly utilize, store, and care for challenge course equipment.
3. Participate in maintenance and inspections of program areas.
4. Facilitate the group through discussions following activities and resolve any conflicts that may arise.
5. Adapt to group goals and needs while debriefing and leading activities.
Preferred (Majors, Experience, GPA, etc.)
1. 2.5 GPA
2. Obtain valid CPR and First Aid certification and blood-borne pathogens training within 60 days of being hired.
3. Current ECU student.
4. Clearance to operate University vehicles through a driver’s license check.
5. Ability to obtain belay certification through ECU’s climbing wall clinic within two weeks of hire.
