We seek a seismic analyst at the Oklahoma Geological Survey to join our team that operates a real-time seismic network with more than 90 stations across the state. The seismic analyst is responsible for analyzing recordings of current and historical earthquakes to provide timely and reliable dissemination of those earthquakes to the public. They will work within the seismic team to ensure that network delivers reliable data and scientific products. The work environment is mainly office-based, though there would be the expectation to participate in fieldwork, as needed. As such, a driver's license and good driving record would be required. Finally, there would be opportunities to work in outreach to schools and communities for official events. The candidate would be responsible for working with a team to develop outreach programming and participate in outreach events approximately no more than 20% of their time. There would be the occasional rare need to analyze events off-hours on a rotating schedule determined by the Seismic Team supervisor.
Some specific duties will include:
- Assist in maintaining sensitive seismograph equipment in a laboratory setting and keep an accurate inventory of equipment and supplies.
- Performs fieldwork as needed to make observations and collect data.
- Prepare for and install seismometers in outdoor environments.
- Analyzes and interprets data.
- Maintain and cultivate a safety-oriented approach to working in the field and laboratory environments.
- Operates and maintains highly technical research equipment and facilities and assists others in the proper use of the equipment.
- Procures supplies and equipment needed for laboratory and field operations.
- Contribute to successful team project management by demonstrating initiative in tackling tasks, while communicating project objectives and milestones.
- Maintain thorough communication with the public and other stakeholders.
- Assists in preparing funding proposals.
- Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.
Job Requirements

Required Education: Bachelors degree in a related field, AND:
- 24 months of related research experience.
Equivalency Substitution: Will accept a 48 months of related experience in lieu of the Bachelors degree for a total of 72 months of related experience.
Skills:
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- Highly organized and able to handle multiple projects and deadlines
- Ability to communicate well and to handle multiple projects and deadlines
- Technical writing skills
- Knowledge of research methodologies and techniques
- Project management experience
- Knowledge of specialized terminology (e.g., scientific or technical)
Certifications:
- Valid Driver's License required to be able to use University vehicles to do fieldwork.
Advertised Physical Requirements:
- Ability to engage in repetitive motions.
- Ability to work in varied settings and locations as determined by research goals.
- May be required to travel.
Departmental Preferences:
- Geology or geophysics degree or work experience
- Familiarity with command-line Linux operating systems
- Basic familiarity with computer networking, including SSH/VPN, IP addressing, etc.
- Basic data and information management skills (i.e. spreadsheets, databases, wiki editing)
