Security Specialist

The Laboratory Protection Division at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is seeking to hire a Security Specialist to provide support in the Physical Protection Program for the Security Operations Program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsibilities include but are not limited to maintaining the DOE O 473.1A Physical Protection Program.

  • Provide technical support for the Site Physical Security System (security alarms,  CCTV assessment and access control).

  • Develop, update, and execute project plans, Security Area plans, and Site Security Plans.

  • Provide technical support for the site Physical Security System(s).

  • Install and maintain Security Systems.

  • Program and maintain equipment and systems including intrusion detection, video surveillance, asset protection, duress, integrated systems, and equipment related to the alarm monitoring station.

  • Review security requirements and system specification.

  • Provide maintenance and oversight of Physical Security Systems.

  • Implement Security System Maintenance Procedures.

  • Assist the Police Group and their electronic security systems.

  • Maintain capabilities and keep qualifications current (complete required training for assigned tasks and work location).

  • Identify, report, and protect intellectual property and other proprietary information.

  • Support technical security devices i.e., General Dynamics TACLANE, vIPers.

  • Serve as a coordinator for the TEMPEST program.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:

  • a BS degree in a technical field and 4 years work experience or;

  • a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 8 years experience or;

  • a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 9 years relevant work experience or;

  • 10 years relevant work experience.

  • Basic knowledge of IP network technologies.

Experience with installation and termination of Cat 5, Cat6, Cat6A cabling.

Ability to read floor plans/ drawings and interface with clients.

Knowledge of Physical Access Control Systems.

Knowledge of service/installation of access control, video surveillance systems, and other various security related systems.

Perform computer program entry as required to add video cameras, access control and intrusion alarm systems as needed.

Ability to write reports containing technical information.

U.S. citizenship is required and the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE “Q” clearance.

Excellent working knowledge of computer systems, database and spreadsheet management, Microsoft Office products, and web-based business systems is necessary.  

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of DOE O 473.1A Physical Protection Program.

  • Extensive knowledge of MS Windows Operating Systems to include some Windows Server, Domain Controllers, DNS Servers.

  • Knowledge of CCTV and Video Assessments Systems.

  • Experience with low voltage cable systems such as VOICE/ DATA, A/V, SECURITY, CCTV.

  • Bachelor’s degree in IT, computer science, or a related field.

  • Working knowledge of Software House CCURE 9000.

  • TEMPEST and TSCM knowledge.

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

Candidate will be required to at times:

  • Work protracted and/or irregular hours.

  • Perform computer/keyboard work.

  • Work with or near moving machinery at times.

  • Work outdoors at times.

  • Ability to wear and use personal protective equipment.

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $ 84,000- 114,200 year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
