Job Summary

The Security Supervisor duties involve supervising security officers who: provide safety and security to learners, patients and staff, de-escalate patients and visitors who are behaving as though they are experiencing mental crisis, guard university property, observe and report suspicious circumstances and criminal activity to UC Health Communications Technicians and UCSFPD Communications Dispatch for further investigation/disposition by UCSF PD, patrol  UCSF preventing crime and increasing safety for visitors, learners, Staff and patients, assist with crowds and traffic at public events.

Under general supervision of the Security Operations Manager and the Security Director, the Security Supervisor will supervise and train or oversee the training of all Public Safety Ambassadors and/or Public Safety Officers.   Supervisors will be responsible for completing performance evaluations.

Supervisors will spend at least 50-75 percent of their shift in the field, actively working with and observing the officers they supervise, as they work.  Supervisors are expected to respond to calls for service, they are expected to take a supervisory role on the calls when necessary. Supervisors are expected to assist their officers on calls for service and they are also expected to assist with break/lunch relief by covering posts when shift coverage is low.  Security Supervisor candidates must be able to successfully pass fingerprint and background checks.

The Security Services Supervisor has supervisory responsibility over a group of Security Service Officers on an assigned shift or detail, performs administrative functions related to shift/event scheduling, vacations, time off and ensuring accuracy of time keeping, report preparation, and information gathering and dissemination. The shift supervisor oversees the training of officers in the field, under the guidance of their division manager.

The Security Services Supervisor will provide direct on-site supervision of Security Officers to ensure compliance with stated policies and program services. Incumbent will serve as the site/shift Supervisor and will provide direct liaison of all critical matters to the Security Administration team members in their absence, to ensure compliance with departmental or organizational culture, policies, procedures, and defined internal controls. The Security Services Supervisor ensures accountability and stewardship of department resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental standards and procedures.

Department Description

The UCSF Security Services Division strives to ensure the safety and security of learners, staff, and patients inside and outside of UCSF properties, clinics, and health facilities. They assist UCSF PD to provide a crime-free and safe environment through the highest level of professional services, integrity, respect, and excellent customer service.
The UCSF Security Services Division is a Division in the UCSF Police Department. The UCSF Police Department’s overriding mission is to enhance the safety and quality of life for students, faculty, and staff across the UCSF system. By working in partnership with the community, UCSF PD strives to promote public safety and crime prevention through education and enforcement; maintain public order while preserving the legal rights of all individuals; to provide efficient and courteous service; and reduce the impact of crime.  The UCSF Police Department is known for its community service orientation, effectiveness at preventing crime through campus community involvement, and for providing a safe living and working environment for the promotion of education, research, and public service. The Security Services Division provides site security services to a daily population of over 60,000 people at university and contract locations.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Four years of work experience in Security Services
  • One year of proven work experience in a leadership or supervisory role i.e. scheduling, personnel management, labor relations, and other supervisory skills.
  • Experience performing all aspects of the security function within the specific division the promotion is occurring in.
  • Interpersonal skills to effectively work well with others to achieve common goals across the entire division; ability to work with all age groups and individuals from diverse backgrounds and effective problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent customer service, to quickly address questions or issues. 
  • Ability to supervise and train assigned security officers.
  • Past work experience with communications equipment, reporting systems, CCTV monitoring, and all on-site security equipment.  
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in mentoring and advising employees. Actively cooperates and supports the work of others.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and execute plans to meet deadlines.
  • Organizational skills to be applied to coordinating assigned staff schedules and unit operations.
  • Ability to write reports, ability to fluently speak, read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to apply judgment to quickly evaluate issues and identify a potential solution on the spot within defined procedures and policies.
  • Interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and/ or stressful situations with a multi-cultural population and escalate appropriately. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work calmly under stress during emergencies and have sound judgment skills.
  • Fingerprinting and background check required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • AA / BA / MS Degree or related training in law enforcement, industrial security, business, personnel management or other related field.
  • Knowledge of the organization, HR, and UC policies and processes. Knowledge and ability to monitor compliance with relevant regulatory agencies' federal and state requirements.
  • Experience performing all duties required for both the UC Health and Campus Security Divisions.

License/Certification

Licenses: 

  • Valid California Class-C Driver’s License (required)

Certifications:

  • CPI 1-3 Crisis Prevention Institute within the first 60 days of employment (required)
  • IAHSS Basic Security Officer Certificate within the first 60 days of employment (required)
  • IAHSS Advance Officer Certificate within the first 90 days of employment (required)
  • IAHSS Supervisory Certificate within the first 120 days of employment (required).
  • AVADE certification or similar management of assaultive behavior certification program
