Job Description Summary:
Manages a sub-department section or function. Assists department director with administration of policies, procedures and employee relations. May act as assistant director in their absence or when a department does not have an assistant director.
Non-commissioned, civilian position that works in the Public Safety Division of the University of Kansas Medical Center Police Department.  This position reports directly to the Director of Security and serves as the daily Operations Manager for the University of Kansas Medical Center’s Main Campus. 
This position is tasked with developing and managing the overall security operations to achieve the overall goals and objectives of the Department, the University of Kansas Medical Center Support Services and the University of Kansas Health Systems.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must successfully pass the International Association of Hospital Safety & Security (IAHSS) Basic and Supervisor Certification examination levels within 90 days of employment.

  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted (corrective lenses acceptable) driver’s license.

  • Ability to efficiently operate motorized vehicles, two-way radios, and other equipment.

  • Read and understand written laws, rules, and regulations.

  • Must successfully complete a background investigation.

Required Qualifications

Education: Associates Degree in Management, Criminal Justice or closely related field.

Work Experience:

  • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in the security services industry or closely related services industry.

  • Three (3) to five (5) years managerial and supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Skills:

  • Demonstrate superior critical thinking, decision making and communication skills.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office 360 software and ability to learn institutional software systems and surveillance monitoring systems.

Job Duties Outlined:

  • Plan and manage the security services functions within the Security Operations Division of Public Safety.  Manage security operations in a manner that provides excellent service that ensures safety and security.

  • Ability to make recommendations for the improvement of services that promote efficiency and effectiveness. 

  • Develop and maintain a working knowledge of the functions, operations and needs of the department, division, and customers.

  • Build and maintain relationships that result in effective communication, harmonious relationships, connectivity, and efficient operations. 

  • Work collaboratively with the health systems and KUMC internal and external entities to fulfill the department’s pre-established goals and objectives.

  • Work in a manner that positively impacts employee morale and promotes a team-oriented organizational culture.

  • Participate in the hiring process, supervise, train, evaluate and discipline security operations staff members. 

  • Work with supervisory personnel to develop workforce planning and staffing models that will ensure optimal service levels. 

  • Ensure employees comply with departmental and University policies and procedures.

  • Manage and process employee payroll information including leave requests, sick and FMLA usage reporting.

  • Develop analysis tools, methods, and strategies to measure progress of Security Operations in achieving goals and objectives. 

  • Will work closely with the Parking Services Director to ensure all entities are working toward a unified goal.

  • Maintain and update policies and procedures as needed. 

  • Oversee new employee training requirements. 

  • Control and maintain equipment and uniforms issued.

  • Supports the International Association for Hospital Safety and Security (IAHSS) program of distinction, the Malcolm Baldrige Framework, and the Jayhawk Way initiative.

  • Assist in the security operations recruiting efforts.

  • Other duties as assigned

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
