Required Qualifications:  As per Civil Service Standards and Specifications. Must have taken and passed the specific job related Civil Service exam and be reachable on the appropriate Civil Service list. The Civil Service list for this position might provide insufficient acceptors, therefore, a non-competitive appointment may be made through the NY Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program.  Qualifications for non-competitive appointment are Must have a current Security Guard Photo ID issued by the New York State Department of State.  Candidate must meet physical/ medical requirements and substance abuse screening as determined by the Director of Health Services of the department of Civil Service. A thorough character investigation will be made by University Police.  Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver’s License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations.  (***Out-of-State Applicants, see "Special Notes”).  Must be able to perform mandatory overtime.

Brief Description of Duties: To afford safety and security with duties to include the following:  

  • Patrol buildings and facilities to identify, report and address safety and security concerns.
  • Greet visitors and staff while verifying credentials.
  • Respond to facility calls for service, events and emergencies.
  • Respond to calls for assistance with difficult clients and visitors.
  • Assist clients with disabilities, visitors or employees in all possible ways including escorting them through area.
  • As directed, assists police and firefighters at the scene of accidents.
  • Prepare written reports of shift activities including actions taken to report or resolve incidents or problems.
  • Prevent theft of state or personal property by means of presence and witness.
  • May operate a motor vehicle to transport people and cargo to emergency situations. 
  • Administer first aid to sick or injured persons.
  • Other duties as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:  These are full-time positions, 40 hours per week, shifts and pass days varied.  FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.  Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.  Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference.

Posting Overview: This position will remain posted until filled or for a maximum of 90 days. An initial review of all applicants will occur two weeks from the posting date. Candidates are advised on the application that for full consideration, applications must be received before the initial review date (which is within two weeks of the posting date). If within the initial review no candidate was selected to fill the position posted, additional applications will be considered for the posted position; however, the posting will close once a finalist is identified, and at minimal, two weeks after the initial posting date. Please note, that if no candidate were identified and hired within 90 days from initial posting, the posting would close for review, and possibly reposted at a later date.

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).

For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.  At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments. In May 2024, if a temporary NY HELPS employee is satisfactorily performing in the position, the appointment will be changed from temporary pending Civil Service Commission Action to permanent non-competitive and the official probationary period will begin.

At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

Essential Position:  This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed.  Positions that are designated as such are required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.

Patient Contact:  Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements:  Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook University's Employee Health Services (The hiring department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination), clear a background investigation, submit (3) written reference, and provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).  Please be advised that failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.

***Out-of-State Applicants: Please note as a condition of employment and in order for this position to be tendered, the successful incumbent will be required to provide evidence of a valid license and driving abstract from the state issuing the license within five business days of a conditional offer and must obtain a NYS driver's license within 30 days of official start date.
