Job Description

The ASU Art Museum with the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University is seeking a Security Officer for our Ceramics Research Center at Brickyard to maintain a safe environment for museum employees, visitors and property by monitoring areas on foot and enforcing museum rules and regulations. This position assists with all aspects of visitor services at the museum including greeting visitors at the reception desk, tracking and entering visitor data, and patrolling galleries. The museum security officer serves as an advocate for museum visitors, ensuring a positive museum experience while promoting the safety of the art within the galleries.  

The security officer will work 20 hours per week on a set schedule during weekdays and weekends, including special event shifts

Essential Duties

  • Patrols assigned areas on foot, checking for fires, vandalism, suspicious activity or persons or safety/fire hazards.
  • Investigates and/or reports hazards, unusual or suspicious circumstances to campus police unit for correction or follow- up actions; maintains contact with campus police.
  • Checks doors and windows of buildings to ensure they are tightly closed and locked; notes in written log any unlocked doors/windows; submits information to supervisor.
  • Observes activity and traffic in assigned area to enforce university rules/regulations; alerts visitors of infractions. 
  • Assists any persons in building or on grounds needing directions or campus information.
  • Escorts people/property to desired destination when monies, documents or safety of property or persons are a concern.
  • Responds to alarms and dispatched calls; decides what actions to take based on situation, facts known and position limitations.
  • Decides when incident requires written report; decides which report form to use and submits to supervisor.
  • Unlocks buildings/doors after checking identification and compliance with university policies.
  • May assist law enforcement officers with crowd control and surveillance at large public events.

Minimum Qualifications

One year experience in security field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Employee may be required to possess a valid US Driver’s license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.

Working Environment

  • Performance of essential functions requires regular moderate physical mobility and exertion in walking, climbing stairs, and standing; at unexpected and unscheduled times. 
  • Work may require strenuous physical activity related to responding to emergencies or alarms including evening and weekend hours including some holidays. 
  • Incumbents must be prepared to respond immediately to all emergencies.  
  • Must be able to climb stairs, lift and carry up to 35lbs, walk, stand and/or sit up to 8 hrs. per day.  
  • Must be able to work effectively both in and outdoors during all weather conditions.
