Section Gardener

Under the supervision of a crew leader, performs a variety of gardening and/or landscape maintenance techniques in a research environment in order to maintain high quality aesthetic standards throughout the campus community. Performs work in accordance with Institute and regulatory agencies safety standards and practices.

• Apply knowledge of grounds and/or landscape maintenance while using basic hand tools and equipment such as hoes, shovels, pruners, hedge shears, and periodically leaf blowers.
• Perform basic pruning and trimming, cultivate flower beds, pull weeds, and water areas as necessary.
• Transplant small plant material and maintain new plantings of shrubs and color beds during established periods.
• Identify, flag and report sprinkler problems.
• Clean maintenance equipment and report equipment problems.
• Monitor campus areas, sweep hardscape surfaces, and empty trash and cigarette containers.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Experience

• One year of experience in a gardening, landscape, or nursery landscape environment.
• Knowledge of botanical or common names of plants.
• Knowledge of tools and equipment and methods and materials used in landscape maintenance.
• Must possess, or have the ability to obtain by the date of hire, a valid California Driver's License, and maintain it throughout the course of employment.

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
• Must be able to walk, bend, and twist on a constant basis.
• Ability to work in an outside environment exposed to elements.
