What we want

The Second Assistant Engineer participates in the operation and maintenance of the ship's propulsion machinery and related systems. The primary focus of the 2nd Assistant Engineers duties aboard the Steam Vessel TS Kennedy is the propulsion boilers and ancillary equipment and systems including but not limited to boiler water chemistry, fuel oil service and transfer, air heaters, economizers, super heaters, forced draft fans, bunkering, soot blowers, feed pumps, combustion controls, burners and burner management, boiler safety systems, medium speed auxiliary generator engine, etc. As 2nd Assistant Engineer aboard the Diesel Electric Vessel NSMV IV the duties include fuel oil service and transfer equipment and systems, ship service generator engines and controls, engine safety systems, etc. Performs other duties to support the vessel as directed by the Chief Engineer.

Physical Requirements: Must maintain USCG/STCW Medical Certificate.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in maritime engineering or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

  • Three years of experience, two of which must be as 2nd Assistant Engineer of Steam Vessels of unlimited Horsepower and one year of additional experience as 2nd Assistant Engineer of Motor Vessels of unlimited horsepower.

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • US Merchant Marine License- 2nd Assistant Engineer (Steam, Unlimited); 2nd Assistant Engineer (Motor, Unlimited) current, STCW Medical Certificate, STCW Endorsements as applicable for international voyages, valid Passport.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Practical and theoretical knowledge of the steam & water cycle, including the condensate, feedwater, main/auxiliary steam as well as the ancillary equipment and system related to boiler operation. Practical and theoretical knowledge of large medium speed diesel engines and ancillary systems driving electrical generators. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to work in a student-oriented training environment. Working knowledge and experience with ISM code vessel safety management systems. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Universal Refrigeration Technician.

  • Good communication skills.

  • Ability to work with and mentor cadets.

Essential Duties/Tasks:

  • 2nd Assistant Engineer Duties - The Second Assistant Engineer participates in the operation and maintenance of the ship's propulsion machinery and related systems. The primary focus of the 2nd Assistant Engineers duties aboard the Steam Vessel TS Kennedy is the propulsion boilers and ancillary equipment and systems including but not limited to boiler water chemistry, fuel oil service and transfer, air heaters, economizers, super heaters, forced draft fans, bunkering, soot blowers, feed pumps, combustion controls, burners and burner management, boiler safety systems, etc. As 2nd Assistant Engineer aboard the Diesel Electric Vessel NSMV IV the duties include fuel oil service and transfer equipment and systems, ship service generator engines and controls, engine safety systems, etc. Participates in the maintenance and repair of equipment and systems related to propulsion boilers and diesel generators. Stands watch as assistant engineer in the engine room during training sea terms or at other times when the ship is underway or a necessary.

  • Instruction - Serves as a mentor to engineering cadets in the engine license program to the extent that it does not interfere with the primary duties of the operation and maintenance of the equipment and systems enumerated above.. Assists in the training and development of cadets aboard the training ship.

Other Requirements and Factors:


Must be present and participate during sea terms and shipyard periods or other periods ship is away from Galveston. Pre-employment and random testing for drugs and alcohol required by TAMU System and University Rule (34.02.99 M1, 8.6.1) Position is exempt from overtime. Duties may require you to work in excess of 40 hours per week. Must have own transportation when ship is in ROS status. All positions are security-sensitive. Must pass USCG/DOT drug test prior to employment and participate in the University's random drug testing plan for drugs and Alcohol required by TAMU System and University Rule (34.02.99 M1, 8.6.1).  Must be able to sail during all designated underway periods, including training crises aboard the training ship and present for shipyard periods or other periods ship is away from Galveston.
