Seasonal to Decadal Variability of Extreme Precipitation Events Associated with Tropical Cyclones

The Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Program at Princeton University, in association with NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL), seeks a postdoctoral or more senior research scientists to conduct research on the seasonal to decadal variability of extreme precipitation events associated with tropical cyclones.

The primary goal is to identify the effects of anthropogenic climate changes and natural variability on the frequency and intensity of extreme precipitation events related to tropical cyclones on a global scale, with a specific focus on the continental United States. The second goal is to determine the predictability of tropical cyclone-induced extreme precipitation events over seasonal to decadal timescales associated with anthropogenic forcing and natural variability. This research will involve analyzing large datasets of climate simulations and retrospective seasonal to decadal predictions conducted by SPEAR. Proficiency in handling large datasets and a strong understanding of climate dynamics and predictability are essential. 

The selected candidate is required to have a Ph.D. in meteorology, civil engineering, climate sciences, or a related field, and will possess one or more of the following qualifications: (a) strong statistical skills, including experience with large datasets of climate model simulations and observations, (b) a solid background in the climate and variability of tropical cyclones, and (c) expertise in quantifying predictability and prediction skill. The term of appointment is based on rank. Positions at the postdoctoral rank are for one year with the possibility of renewal pending satisfactory performance and continued funding; those hired at more senior ranks may have multi-year appointments.
