Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Seasonal Marine Field Worker for the Haskin Shellfish Research Laboratory Complex. This position will be at the Haskin Shellfish Research Laboratory Complex which includes the Haskin Shellfish Lab in Port Norris, NJ, the Cape Shore Laboratory in Green Creek, NJ, the New Jersey Aquaculture Innovation Center in North Cape May, NJ and the Fisheries Cooperative Center in Cape May, NJ as well as occasional travel to field sited and may include work onboard boats.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
• Assists with monitoring of Delaware Bay oyster fishery. Monitoring includes field collection aboard research and commercial fishing vessels as well as laboratory processing (measuring, shucking, oyster disease/pathology analysis) of oyster dredge samples.
• Collects scallop samples to test fishing gear modifications and to assist with hydrodynamic modeling studies.
• Performs field work duties which involves data collection on a commercial scallop vessel while at sea for up to one week.
• Performs additional duties both in field and lab including evaluating the performance of living shorelines projects and examining interactions between horseshoe crabs and aquaculture farms. Data entry and audit associated with these tasks will also be required.

Minimum Education and Experience

• Requires a high school/vocational school education or equivalent experience’.

Certifications/Licenses

• A valid driver’s license and reliable personal transportation is required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in biology or related field.
• Interest in biology, and/or scientific/technical laboratory training or research experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Close attention to detail, ability to fill out detailed data sheets, computer knowledge of Microsoft Excel.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• A willingness to work outdoors in adverse conditions during days and hours that correspond to tides, weather and other patterns of nature is required.
• Ability to lift 30 lbs.
