Description
Under the direction of the Interim Senior Director of Plant Science and Research, the Habitat Restoration Assistant will support full scale habitat restoration through invasive species control, native plantings, land management and monitoring. The position will assist in conducting a variety of field-based research projects including invasive species field trials, vegetation surveys and wildlife monitoring. In addition, the Habitat Restoration Assistant will perform routine plot maintenance and general labor functions, when needed. Job Responsibilities ● Assist in the implementation of field-based habitat restoration, including wetland enhancement, prairie establishment, and forest restoration. ● Conduct land management tasks, including invasive species control (using manual and chemical methods), trail beautification, and natural area maintenance. ● Utilize a variety of equipment and hand tools, including tractors, mowers, UTVs, chainsaws, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, and herbicide backpack sprayers. ● In coordination with the Ecosystems Manager, conduct invasive species field trials, vegetation surveys and wildlife monitoring. ● Coordinate with staff to promote native plants through native plant propagation, invasive plant treatment, and greenhouse upkeep. ● Assist in biological monitoring through data collection, including checking for quality control, correcting discrepancies, conducting nest box maintenance, and monitoring various research sites.
Qualifications
● Associate degree or two (2) years of demonstrated experience in natural resources, wildlife ecology, ecosystem restoration, conservation or related field. ● Ability to regularly use motorized equipment and hand tools, including tractors, mowers, chainsaws, and string trimmers while adhering to all safety protocols. ● Demonstrated knowledgeable of central Ohio flora and fauna. ● Strong communication skills (verbal, written, and interpersonal). ● Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physically strenuous work. ● Ability to regularly work weekends, occasional holidays, and evenings as scheduled.
