Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) is seeking an experienced Scrum Master to help advance our software development efforts in the Scientific Networking Division.

We’re a dynamic organization, highly-motivated and focused on results. Our mission is to accelerate science by delivering unparalleled networking capabilities, tools and innovations. As an organization, we are small enough to be agile, but large enough to offer rewarding challenges on a global scale. ESnet provides innovative networking and collaborative services to national research laboratories and other Department of Energy (DOE) sites, connecting them to research and education networks worldwide.

In this exciting role, you are the go-to person for applying scrum to produce high-quality work.  You’ll help create self-organizing teams that are flexible and productive during sprints. • As part of the ESnet Project Management Office, lead multiple scrum teams in using Agile methodology and scrum practices.
  • Manage each project’s scope and timeline to deliver products on time and to a high standard of quality.
  • Facilitate internal communication and effective collaboration.
  • Be the point of contact for external communications (e.g. from customers or stakeholders).
  • Coordinate sprint planning meetings, conduct sprint retrospective meetings and host daily stand-ups.
  • Analyze burndown charts to ensure projects stay on track and velocity is maintained.
  • Ensure scrum is understood and the team adheres to scrum theory, practice, and guidelines.
  • Suggest new tooling that would aid in the agile development process.
  • Ensure team members are adequately trained to understand agile processes.
  • Lead the scrum and development teams in self-organization.
  • Help the scrum team achieve higher levels of scrum maturity.
  • Help build a productive environment where team members ‘own’ the product and enjoy working on it.
  • Administer the Scrum Board by working with product owners to handle backlogs and new requests.
  • Help the product owner and development team achieve customer satisfaction.
  • Help teams implement changes effectively by resolving conflicts and removing obstacles that occur.
  • Ensure deliverables are up to quality standards at the end of each sprint.

What is Required:

  • Bachelors/Advanced Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Business or similar field.
  • Scrum master certification.
  • 5+ years in IT project management experience including project planning, scheduling, and budgeting.
  • Experience in a scrum master role.
  • Experience with Jira or other computerized project tracking tools.
  • Experience with successful Agile techniques and tools.
  • Familiarity with software development.
  • Excellent communication and servant leadership skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of Scrum techniques and artifacts (such as definition of done, user stories, automated testing, backlog refinement).
  • Ability to analyze and think quickly and to resolve conflict.
  • Ability to work with and lead a team.
  • Outstanding organizational skills.
  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment.
