The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Microbiology, is seeking a is seeking a Scientist II.

General Responsibilities  

  • To employ a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures in a particular field of specialization.
  • To plan, design, and conduct research and present findings.

 

Key Duties & Responsibilities  

  • Prepares and submits animal and laboratory protocols and institutional approvals (IACUC, EHS, IRB, DEA).
  • Trains laboratory members to handle animals and perform approved animal techniques. Trains laboratory members in flow cytometry including theory, panel design, sample processing, sample acquisition, data analysis, and data presentation.
  • Maintains laboratory flow cytometers and work with the manufacturer to troubleshoot any issues with the instrument.
  • Trains laboratory members in other research techniques as applicable.
  • Develops, optimizes, and troubleshoot flow cytometry panels.
  • Assists with staffing by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees.
  • Assists with the management of projects and project personnel, including multi-PI studies, ensuring that project goals and timelines are met.
  • Assists with the preparation and submission of manuscripts, technical reports, and funding applications. This includes writing, diagram and figure preparation using Adobe, bibliography preparation using EndNote, and the preparation of budgets.
  • Assists with the training and day to day supervision of laboratory staff including interns and students.
  • Maintains a functional electronic notebook as a lab record of activities and data.
  • Ensures proper storage of data Store samples in liquid nitrogen and log them in appropriately.
  • Maintains cell lines and log them in appropriately.
  • Processing and analysis of tissues from mice, including but not limited to: necropsy, cell isolation and enumeration; cell staining for flow cytometry; cell storage; cell culture. Performs cell culture experiments.
  • Performs experiments with infectious agents including HIV under appropriate BSL containment.
  • Ensures compliance with all ARP, IACUC, EHS, and DEA regulations in regards to the use of research animals.
  • Responds to the weekend/holiday animal pager and freezer alarms as scheduled Writes/revises study technical reports and SOPs.  
  • Prepares and handles animals using approved techniques on living animals.
  • Provides routine care, maintenance and animal husbandry.
  • Ensures appropriate record keeping for the colony, including ARP cage cards on each cage and transfers of animals between protocols.
  • Perform survival surgeries.
  • Records and maintains surgical logs.
  • Validates mice (routine bleeding/flow analysis).
  • Handles and restrains, and performs routine animal techniques on animals exposed to/infected with HIV or other pathogens.
  • Perform animal necropsies.
  • Prepare standard media, reagents and chemical solutions used for testing purposes. Preparation/labeling of tubes for specimen collection.
  • Organizes, maintains, and records the appropriate storage of specimens.
  • Performs inventory of common laboratory supplies and reagents as needed.
  • Stocks reagents and shelves when needed.
  • Maintains safe, clean and organized laboratory environment and areas.
  • Updates Laboratory Animal and Mouse Ordering databases.
  • Prepares surgery packs, harvest tools and supplies in a timely manner.
  • Performs routine cleaning of laboratory equipment and coordinate repairs when needed Collects flow cytometry data.
  • Observes, collects, and records a variety of other data.
  • Organizes and tabulates data while ensuring quality control of data collection.
  • Clearly communicates results to PI.
  • Analyzes and compiles flow cytometry data and input data into animal database. Critically evaluates data and compiles analyzed data into spreadsheets or graphs as appropriate.
  • Evaluates and interprets collected data and prepare progress reports.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Annual Salary Range   $74,100.00 - $120,700.00 

     

    Qualifications

     
    • Doctor of Philosophy, D.V.M. or M.D. degree in a related field and four (4) years of related experience
    • OR M.D. and Master's degree and two (2) years of related experience
    • OR Master's degree and six (6) years of related experience
    • OR Bachelor's degree and eight (8) years of related experience

    Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. 

     

    Preferences

    • Prefer candidates with experience working with HIV and infectious diseases in animals.
    • Degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Immunology, Pharmacology, Neuroscience, or a closely related field preferred.
