The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department Civitan International Research Center, is seeking a is seeking a Scientist II.  The Scientist II will be primarily responsible for day-to-day operations of Behavioral Core including equipment acquisition and maintenance, space allocations, access, tracking core usage, billing and collections, among other tasks. The Scientist II will report to the direct supervisor as well as to a Behavioral Core Operating Committee. 

General Responsibilities  

  • To employ a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures in a particular field of specialization.
  • To plan, design, and conduct research and present findings.

 

Key Duties & Responsibilities  

 

  • Testing behavioral equipment weekly or after each use to ensure it is in working order for the users.
  • Maintaining and repairing behavioral equipment.
  • Developing and implementing behavioral protocols known to work in a variety of rodent strains.
  • Maintaining accessible paper and electronic copies of behavioral protocols and disseminating to users.
  • Working with Faculty and laboratory personnel to train users in proper use of equipment, behavioral protocols, data handling, data analysis, graphing, and interpretation of behavioral data.
  • Working with laboratory personnel and faculty to design and develop new protocols as needed. 
  • Providing text for methods and results sections of grant applications and papers as requested.
  • Communicating, disseminating, and advertising Behavioral Core capabilities to ensure equitable access and continued client base.
  • Working with Rodent Behavioral Core Operating Committee to ensure that Behavioral Core space is optimized for maximum benefit to all users.
  • Monitoring and oversee users of the Rodent Behavioral Core to ensure equitable access to and proper use of equipment.
  • Tracking usage and billing users in using existing software systems. This will require communication, outreach, explaining, and one-on-one interactions with department managers, faculty, among others.
  • Outreach to various departments and centers to learn of their needs and to inform them of the core's capabilities with the goal of growing and broadening the core's user base over time to ensure financial stability. 
  • Archiving all core activities, protocols, billing records, equipment and maintenance updates, available space, etc. and leveraging this information to assist stakeholders in seeking extramural support for the Behavioral Core.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Annual Salary Range   $74,100.00 - $110,000.00 

     

    Qualifications

     
    • Doctor of Philosophy, D.V.M. or M.D. degree in a related field and four (4) years of related experience
    • OR M.D. and Master's degree and two (2) years of related experience
    • OR Master's degree and six (6) years of related experience
    • OR Bachelor's degree and eight (8) years of related experience

    Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. 

     

    Preferences

    • Extensive experience with research mice.
    • PhD in a related life science field who have extensive experience handling mice.
