The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Mechanical & Materials Engineering, is seeking a Scientist II to be responsible for the overall operation of the MPAD Center and to oversee projects within the lab. The individual will supervise a research team, direct and teach lab practices, and manage lab equipment and supplies. 

General Responsibilities

  • To employ a broad knowledge of principles, practices and procedures in a particular field of specialization.
  • To plan, design and conduct research and present findings.  

Key Duties & Responsibilities  

  • Assumes significant responsibility for the overall operation of the Center.
  • Oversees projects within the laboratory.
  • Monitors results, detects and reports unusual outcomes, develops and implements modifications and provides reports or other consultation to the Center Director and other PI's.
  • Contributes to the design, interpretation and writing of grant proposals and publications.
  • Supervises and oversees maintenance of lab equipment and orders and supervises lab supplies.
  • Supervises, graduate research assistants, technicians and engineers on projects.
  • Prepares project update reports for submission to funding agencies.
  • Conducts design and analysis via solid modelling and FEA software for composite structures as required by projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Annual Salary Range   $74,100 - $100,000

     

    Qualifications

     

    Doctor of Philosophy, D.V.M. or M.D. degree in a related field and four (4) years of related experience 

    • OR M.D. and Master's degree and two (2) years of related experience 
    • OR Master's degree and six (6) years of related experience
    • OR Bachelor's degree and eight (8) years of related experience required.
    • Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. 

    Preferences

    • Experience with composited-related processing and design. 
    • Experience with the usage of equipment in materials processing, specifically experience with long fiber thermoplastics and polymer-based composites. 
    • Experience in the design and analysis of composite structures.
