HJF is seeking a Scientist II or III to support the Wound Infections Department, within the Infectious Diseases Directorate (IDD), located at the Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC) in Silver Spring, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to the Wound Infections Department.

Incumbent work with the Head and Deputy Head of Wound Infections Department on leading the development and execution of research projects. Supervises projects and investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products, and problems. Develops new technologies and protocols.

Responsibilities:

  • Plans, executes, and oversees laboratory research. Formulates experimental hypotheses and designs experimental protocols.
  • Monitors scientific literature. Prepares written reports and manuscripts for submission to scientific journals and prepares patent applications.
  • Generates project proposals to successfully compete for research funding from DoD and other sources.
  • Assists with ongoing performance of a robust program of laboratory research on the control of bacterial infections of military medical relevance. Completes other WID projects as needed. Prepares status and performance reports as requested.
  • Processes and interprets experimental data. Makes scientific observations, maintains detailed workbooks/documentation, and ensures documentation fulfills generally accepted professional/industry standards.
  • Collaborates with other technical and professional staff.
  • Trains and supervises technical staff.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

    • Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Immunology of infections, or medical microbiology experience required.
    • Experience in applied research that contributes to product development.
    • Research program development experience.
    • Ability to apply a broad range relevant to biomedical research performance and management.
    • Flexibility in problem-solving approaches.
    • Professional interpersonal skills including supervision, teamwork, collaboration, and networking.
    • Background Microbiology or Molecular Biology preferred. Also open to Immunology, Genetics and Cell Biology.
    • Background in animal modeling and prior work with bacterial or viral infections.
    • Experience working in a military environment is a plus. 

    Minimum Education: Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences discipline or M.D.

    Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements:

    Level II: Minimum 5-8 years of work experience is required. 

    Level III: Minimum 8-10 years of work experience is required.

    Supervisory Responsibilities: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.

    Work Environment: This position takes place in a laboratory setting.

    Work Arrangement: 100% on-site. 

    Background/Security: Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Tier I investigation/Public Trust and a Common Access Card (CAC).
