HJF is seeking a Scientist II or III to support the Department of Retrovirology with Non-Human Primate (NHP) Laboratory located at Bangkok, Thailand. HJF provides scientific, technical, and programmatic support services to NHP Laboratory.  

Serves as the Head of the Non-Human Primate (NHP) Lab, Department of Retrovirology, at the Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Sciences (AFRIMS), Bangkok, Thailand. Supervises the Department of Retrovirology’s NHP lab with research focusing on the development of HIV vaccine products, evaluation of HIV remission strategies and understanding the impact of HIV, and other pathogens and non-infectious diseases on neurocognition and support research on emerging infectious disease according to program priority. Maintains awareness of AFRIMS’ military research priorities, identifying research opportunities and funding. Works collaboratively and transparently with other Retrovirology and AFRIMS researchers to identify new research opportunities to maximize applicability of the NHP lab. Advises Department management on scientific matters pertaining to the NHP lab.

NOTE:  As a U.S. Government contractor, all HJF employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by January 18, 2022. Proof of vaccination or an approved religious or medical accommodation will be required.

Responsibilities: 

  • Work location will be at the Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Sciences, Bangkok, Thailand.
  • Design and draft NHP study protocols.
  • Image processing and data analysis of experiments involving tissue immunofluorescence and in situ hybridization.
  • Develop, optimize and validate new assays.
  • Prepare annual report, CITES submissions and other regulatory documents.
  • Support the preparation of NHP lab budgets.
  • Coordinate with other labs in the Department of Retrovirology and the Department of Veterinary Medicine to ensure the successful conduct of studies.
  • Supervise and assess the quality of all tasks and assays performed by the NHP lab to ensure that all activities are conducted under good clinical laboratory practices. These include the supervision of Sample processing, storage, archiving and repository maintenance.
  • Making and sectioning of paraffin tissue blocs, slides staining and image acquisition.
  • RNAscope and DNAscope tissue immunofluorescence assays.
  • HIV RNA and HIV DNA assays.
  • CD4 T cell count.
  • Assays to measure soluble markers of immune activation.
  • MHC typing.
  • Maintenance of laboratory area, equipment and supplies, stock inventory.
  • Maintenance and management of documents including laboratory records, data records, supply and reagents record and equipment maintenance records.
  • Performs supervisory administrative functions such ensuring non-discriminatory workplace, adherence to policies as enumerated in applicable employee personnel management requirements.
  • Participates in periodic departmental administrative and scientific staff meetings.
  • Participates in evening calls.
  • Willingness to travel to international conferences.
  • Comply with all applicable Occupational Health and Safety Instruction.
  • Other tasks and duties as may be assigned.
  • Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques; excellent communication skills; ability to troubleshoot technical procedures; ability to work independently and supervise others

    Minimum Education: A Doctoral degree is required.

    Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: 

    • Scientist II: A minimum of 6-8 years of experience required.
    • Scientist III: A minimum of 8-10 years of experience required. 

    Physical Capabilities: Conditions that pose risk of exposure to pathogens.

    Supervisory Responsibilities: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.

    Work Environment: This position takes place in a laboratory setting. Evening, holiday, or weekend work required. Occasional travel required, Two trips per year to the USA of 1-week duration for internal meetings and conference attendance.

    Work Arrangement: 100% on-site.
