The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Department of Radiology, is seeking a Scientist I. The primary responsibility of the Scientist is to conduct assigned research projects independently, provide scientific and technical support for students and staff, and assist the PI in grant applications.

 

General Responsibilities

  • To employ a broad knowledge of principles, practices and procedures in a particular field of specialization.
  • To plan, coordinate and conduct research.

Key Duties & Responsibilities  

  • Following instructions and discussions with the principal investigator, designs research protocols, including developing and extending procedures for the collection, verification, and management of data. This includes conducting literature searches related to the research project.
  • Solves practical problems relating to difficulties with equipment or test subjects.
  • Implements technical or procedural improvements and establishes quality control and assurance. This includes optimization of data acquisition, analysis, and storage.
  • Provides training to trainees and staff for image acquisition and analysis, and work in a team environment to complete research projects.
  • Writes and submits papers, progress reports, and grants based on individually directed research projects to publications and committees for publication or presentation to peers. This is done independently for individually directed research.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Annual Salary Range   $63,125.00 - $65,000.00

     

    Qualifications

     
    • Doctor of Philosophy, D.V.M. or M.D. degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience  
    • OR  M.D. and Master's degree.  
    • OR  Master's degree and four (4) years of related experience  
    • OR  Bachelor's degree and six (6) years of related experience 

    Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. 

     

    Preferences

    • Ph.D. in life sciences, molecular/cell biology, immunology, chemistry, engineering, or related field with three plus (3+) years of experience working with animal models of cancer.
    • Familiarity with IACUC protocols and guidelines and in vivo study conduct is required.
    • Experience with MRI, PET, or SPECT imaging is preferred.
    • Experience with lab management.
    • Comfortable with handling radioactivity for preclinical and human experimentation is required.

    Key Skills

    • Ability to conduct studies, design experimental plans, and perform data analysis independently.
    • Ability to troubleshoot problems, interpret data, and communicate results to peers, superiors, and trainees. Excellent organizational skills are required.
    • Good and recent publication record is preferred.
    • A positive attitude and willingness to learn new skills are required.
