HJF is seeking a Scientist I (Part-Time) to support the Clinical and Experimental Orthopedics Laboratory (CEO) located at Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical, and programmatic support services to CEO.

Mentorship will be provided by senior scientists that are field leaders in their respective disciplines. The position involves pre-clinical testing of cutting edge, first-in-class therapeutics, in rodent models of peripheral nerve injury and spinal cord injury and close collaboration with a biotech startup. The incumbent will perform animal surgeries, administer drug to rodents, conduct behavioral tests, analyze data, write manuscripts and grants, and present at meetings. Experience in performing animal behavioral tests and in behavioral test data analysis is preferred. Additional training will be provided for Academic promotion and independent transition to PI encouraged.

NOTE:  As a U.S. Government contractor, all HJF employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by January 18, 2022. Proof of vaccination or an approved religious or medical accommodation will be required.

Responsibilities: 

  • Assist/perform rodent surgery (sciatic nerve injury and spinal cord injury). (20%)
  • Conduct rodent behavioral test. (20%)
  • Collect rodent tissue samples after euthanasia and performs specialized laboratory research utilizing experimental protocols which involves specialized procedures. (20%)
  • Assist in analyzing behavioral data. (20%)
  • Keep detailed records of experiments and the preparation of data for presentations at scientific meetings and for publication in journals. (10%)
  • Write manuscripts for publication in scientific journals and grant applications and peer-reviewed scientific journals. (10%)
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.  
  • Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Cell culture, rodent surgery, histology, biochemical analysis, behavioral analysis, detailed record keeping, manuscript and grant writing, present at scientific meetings, excellent written and oral skills.

    • Experience in neuroscience research.
    • Experience in handling rodents and conducting behavioral studies.
    • Experience in molecular biology techniques such as western blotting and qPCR.
    • Experience in histology and microscopy.

    Minimum Education: Doctoral degree in Neuroscience, Neurobiology or related discipline required.

    Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: A minimum of 2-5 years of experience required.   

    Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: Excellent written and oral communication skills.

    Work Environment: 

    • Fast-paced collaborative team environment.
    • Academic promotion and transition to independent PI possible.
    • Laboratory-based. Occasional evening, holiday, or weekend work may be required.

    Work Arrangement: 100% onsite.

    Background/Security: Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Tier I investigation/Public Trust and a Common Access Card (CAC).
