High Power Targetry Scientist


Position Summary

Major Duties/Position Responsibilities

  • Target 
    • Participate in the design of multi-slice rotating graphite target system
    • Thermal analysis for the single and multi-slice rotating target system
    • Support FRIB Operations by maintaining and preparing the target system
  • Beam dump 
    • Thermal analysis for mini-channel and rotating beam dump
  • Develop advanced materials for beam intercept devices (
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification. 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities to successfully perform the position

  • Thorough knowledge of target and beam dump systems in heavy ion accelerator
  • High level of expertise in the materials science field
  • Ability to use an electron microscope that produces an image of the material for studying radiation damage
  • Ability to perform thermal/mechanical simulations
  • Ability to design experimental instruments with scientific tools
  • Ability to perform shift work periodically
  • Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively and credibly, both verbally and in writing, with all audiences

Required Degree

Doctorate -Physics or material science


Minimum Requirements
  • PhD in Physics or material science
  • Record of accomplishment in the field of expertise
  • Experience in thermal analysis with scientific software (COMSOL multi-physics of ANSYS fluent)

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with software and hardware for instrument design and fabrication
  • Experience at experimental research projects, data analysis, physics interpretations and reporting of the results
