What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Scientist 1 or Scientist 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

In this role, you will apply your expertise in Python programming to the development of the Common Modeling Framework (CMF), a LANL-built framework that houses modeling strategies and experimental setups for computational work performed in the Weapons Physics Directorate. Many weapons physics user communities depend on CMF for collaboration, version control, consolidation of problem setups, and access to several common modeling strategies used for diverse weapons program applications. Currently, there are approximately 120 users of CMF, organized into communities who use the infrastructure in different ways. New developers will be trained in the use and capabilities of CMF, and do not need prior familiarity with the framework. Job duties will include working with teams on R&D of computational modeling in the LANL weapons program. As part of this effort, you will learn to run our multi-physics codes, as well as providing user support for the infrastructure.

Scientist 1 ($85,400 - $139,600)

After you are trained, contributing to the development of the Common Modeling Framework entails one or more of the following job activities:

  • Develop and maintain drivers and scripts that enhance capability for all CMF users

  • Further develop and maintain the CMF testing infrastructure

  • Provide user support for one or more common models available in the CMF or for one or more user communities

  • With the direction of subject matter experts who will help to define needs, develop capabilities to simplify user interfaces, including post-processing scripts, suite-based tools, and simulation setup techniques

  • Create and help maintain an interface to data repositories that exist outside of CMF

Scientist 2 ($94,100 - $155,700)

In addition to what was outlined above at the Scientist 1 level, one or more of the following job duties are consistent with the higher scientist level:

  • Work with the CMF project leadership to make innovative software solutions based on physics needs available to the broader CMF user base

  • Work with more than one user community to connect work done in related but independent disciplines

  • Provide CMF developer leadership for a particular common model community (following more extensive training and/or experience with CMF, this may include representing your community on the CMF Framework Advisory Board)

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Software Engineering and Design Experience:

You will need experience with one or more of these tasks: developing software tools to address specific technical needs, running computational physics codes, and/or developing models for multi-physics codes. Programming experience is required, including a knowledge of Python. Familiarity with the GitLab DevOps platform is preferred.

Collaboration:

You must have a proven ability to work with others in a team environment. You must have experience with providing user support for a software tool to scientists from a broad range of technical disciplines, many of whom do not have formal software engineering backgrounds.

Professional Integrity:

You must demonstrate commitment to quality research and development, technical and scientific excellence, professional integrity, and personal initiative.

Clearance:

This position requires the ability and willingness to obtain a DOE Q clearance, which typically requires US citizenship.

Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Technical Knowledge:

You will need education or experience in one or more of these technical areas: physics, nuclear or mechanical engineering, chemistry, mathematics, or material science. Some experience in computational modeling or algorithm development is preferred.

Technical Contributions:

You must demonstrate a documented history of technical contributions in one or more of the following fields: nuclear physics, plasma physics, fluid dynamics, astrophysics, shock physics, chemistry, material science, or related STEM fields.

Education/Experience for Scientist 1: Position requires a B.S. degree in physics, mechanical engineering, mathematics, chemistry, or a related STEM field from an accredited college or university and 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Preference will be given to candidates with a M.S.

Education/Experience for Scientist 2: Position requires a B.S. degree in physics, mechanical engineering, mathematics, chemistry, or a related STEM field from an accredited college or university and 4 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Preference will be given to candidates with a M.S. or Ph.D.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience using and developing software for high performance computing systems

  • Experience using or contributing to the development of multi-physics codes

  • Active DOE Q clearance

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2-Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
