TWO (2) OPENINGS ONE (1) FULL-TIME/PERMANENT ONE (1) FULL-TIME/CAREER SEASONAL SCIENTIFIC TECHNICIAN 2 (ST2) LOWER COLUMBIA RIVER VIABLE SALMONID POPULATION (VSP) MONITORING Fish Program - Fish Management Division Cathlamet, Washington – Wahkiakum County Anticipated Career Seasonal Appointment: 10.5 Months - July 16 – May 31 Become part of a dynamic and diverse team that is invested in making a difference in the conservation of Washington State’s salmonid populations. Conduct juvenile salmonid trapping, adult fish weir operations, and adult fall Chinook, Coho, and Chum salmon spawner surveys on the Grays River, Elochoman River, Skamokawa Creek, and other Lower Columbia River tributaries. Operate/maintain juvenile salmonid traps and conduct adult salmonid spawning ground surveys by foot and raft! With that in mind, Picture yourself conducting stream surveys to enumerate live and deceased adult fall Chinook, Chum and Coho salmon and their redds. With your experience you will assist in the installation, operation, maintenance, and removal of juvenile migrant traps (rotary screw and/or fence-panel with live box traps) to collect data needed to estimate juvenile salmonid outmigrant abundance in the Grays River and other basins. The optimal applicants will have a positive can-do attitude as they collect/sample data and are eager to work hard and have fun in an environment where there's never a dull moment. Duties Our Scientific Technician 2, Identifies, enumerates, handles, marks, and recaptures juvenile salmonids and other fishes. Uses a variety of tools to install, maintain, remove, and fabricate design changes to juvenile migrant traps. Gathers data in rivers via foot, raft and snorkeling to identify, count and/or collect fish, and/or deploy and inspect field gear. Assists in the daily installation, operation, and maintenance of the Grays River and Elochoman River adult fish weirs and biological data collection of adult salmonids. Assists in training seasonal employees on proper sampling protocols, fish handling and safety procedures. May snorkels to inspect weirs, for adult Chinook presence/absence before weir installations, cleans weirs, checks for holes in weirs/traps, and could snorkel as part of the R5 mark/re-sight summer steelhead population estimation activities. Conducts adult salmonid spawning ground surveys on Lower Columbia River tributaries to collect data needed to measure viable salmonid population monitoring (VSP) parameters and generate accurate and precise adult salmonid abundance estimates. Uses ToughPad and iPads devices to mark redd locations and enter biological data. Identifies, enumerates, and handles adult salmon. Operates pontoon rafts while conducting duties such as spawning ground surveys in white water conditions/rapids (Class 1-3). Prepares data and field samples for laboratory analysis including salmonid scales for age structure analysis, DNA samples for genetic analysis, Coded Wire Tag (CWT) positive snouts for hatchery origination status, and otolith samples for age/origin analysis. Assists with spawning, collection of biological data, and fish culture of chum salmon at Beaver Creek Hatchery. Accurately records and proofs data collected during juvenile trapping, adult fish weir operations, and stream surveying activities. Uses a computer to enter data into spreadsheets and/or databases. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work Setting, including hazards: Approximately 85% fieldwork which includes working outdoors, exposure to inclement weather/environmental conditions, wet, slippery surfaces, repetitively lifting large live/deceased fish (typically up to 50 lbs.), and repetitively carrying catarafts/loads of equipment/buckets of fish that weigh up to 70 pounds for short distances. Walking up to 6 miles per day, snorkeling up to 6 miles per day in fast flowing/white water conditions, operating catarafts in white water conditions (Class 1 – 3), and climbing into/out of motorized and non-motorized boats. Fieldwork also includes sampling spawned out salmon carcasses with very strong odors, operating, sampling, and tagging salmonids and other species at traps and/or weirs and installing/removing fish monitoring equipment (weirs and traps). Schedule: Typically, 40 hours per week with variable hours per day. Must be willing to work long days, nights, weekends and some holidays - overtime may be accrued. Travel Requirements: Most of the duties are conducted in the field away from the duty station - daily travel from the duty station to/from field locations is required. Tools and Equipment: Basic hand tools, carpentry tools, winches, pulleys, blocks, motorized and non-motorized watercraft, 4x4 vehicles, the ability to tow various equipment, 200’ beach seines, Passive Integrated Transponders (PIT) tag readers, Coded Wire Tag (CWT) detectors, iPads, weighing scales, knives, handheld data loggers, and computers. Customer Interactions: Interacting professionally with other departmental personnel, personnel from other agencies, commercial fishers, and the public.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science AND Two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1. OR Graduation from high school or GED including one year of high school science AND Two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist. Please Note: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes. Certifications/Licenses: Valid Driver’s License. WDFW snorkel training and certification, with completion within six (6) months of hire and renewal expected annually. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience: In juvenile trapping techniques including operation of rotary screw and fence-panel with live box juvenile traps. Ability to: Identify salmonids and other fish species in larval, juvenile and/or adult life stages. Identify salmonid redds. Row non-motorized oar-framed boats such as drift boats and catarafts in white water conditions/rapids (Class 1-3). Perform basic functions in Microsoft Excel and Access. Operate handheld iPad and data logger devices. Work alone in remote locations. Knowledge of: Resistance board and fixed panel adult fish weirs. Juvenile and adult salmonid fish marking and tagging protocols. Fishery monitoring, observing, and sampling. Commercial fishing gear types and methods. Basic carpentry skills. How to operate Coded Wire Tag (CWT) and Passive Integrated Transponders (PIT) tag detectors. Certifications: Basic CPR and First Aid Certified. WDFW snorkel training and certification.
