TWENTY-THREE (23) OPENINGS FULL-TIME/NON-PERMANENT SCIENTIFIC TECHNICIAN 2 (ST2) Fish Program - Fish Management Region 5 - Clark, Cowlitz, Pacific, & Wahkiakum Counties Effective July 1, 2023, the Washington State Legislature has granted a 4% general wage adjustment to positions represented by the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals (WAFWP). Also, effective July 1, 2023, the Scientific Technician 2 classification will be changing from Salary Range 36 to Salary Range 40. Marking Fall Chinook Redds – Credit: Danny Warren With that in mind, Picture yourself contributing to the health and diversity of populations of salmon (including Chinook, coho, chum, and steelhead) and other species, such as sturgeon throughout the Lower Columbia River and its tributaries. This is an opportunity to gather and provide essential information that is needed to assess the status of different stocks of these populations for conservation and to help maintain sustainable recreational and commercial fisheries. Spawning Surveys – Credit: Catherine Morello Duties: Positions filled through this recruitment will vary in the duties that are required. Typical work may include one or more of the following: Conduct adult salmonid spawning ground surveys on the Lower Columbia River and its tributaries. Identify and enumerate (count) adult salmonids (live and dead) and redds while using a GPS or iPad to mark redd locations and enter biological data. Assist with the installation, maintenance, operation and removal of temporary resistance board salmon weirs and fish traps on the Coweeman River. Using a computer at the regional office or in the field, enter data into established spreadsheets and/or databases - includes traps and weir survey databases and carcass tagging spreadsheets. Conduct snorkel surveys in streams and rivers. Monitor and observe commercial fisheries and research test fisheries. Capture, identify, enumerate (count), handle, tag and/or mark salmonids (juveniles and adults) for mark/recapture programs and distribution monitoring – may include coded wire tag (CWT) or passive integrated transponder (PIT) tagging. Interview sport anglers and record catch by species, effort, and biological data - includes collecting biological samples from fish such as salmon, trout, and sturgeon. Enter data into dataloggers and personal digital assistants (PDA). Collect broodstock for established enhancement and hatchery programs. Working Conditions: Positions filled through this recruitment will vary in the working conditions that are required. Typical working conditions may include: Work Setting, including hazards: 85% fieldwork – requires working in inclement weather conditions, repetitively carrying loads up to 70 pounds (catarafts) for short distances, carrying fish weighing from approximately 30 to 100 pounds (live or dead). Walking up to six (6) miles per day over rough terrain, climbing in and out of motorized and non-motorized boats, and sampling spawned out salmon carcasses that can contain strong odors. Rowing non-motorized oar-framed boats such as drift boats and catarafts in white water conditions - class 1 through 3 rapids. 15% office and or laboratory setting – requires operating a computer, and performing various other tasks as assigned. Schedule: 24/7 – Non-scheduled – working holidays and weekends as needed. Travel Requirements: Daily travel from the duty station to/from field locations is required with either a departmental issued vehicle or personal vehicle. Overnight travel may be required. Tools and Equipment: Basic hand and carpentry tools, winches, pulleys, blocks, motorized and non-motorized watercraft, 4x4 vehicles, 200’ beach seines, passive integrated transponder (PIT) tag readers, coded wire tag (CWT) detectors, iPads, weighing scales, knives, handheld data loggers and computers. Customer Interactions: Interacts with other departmental personnel, personnel from other agencies, commercial fishers, and the public.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1. OR Graduation from high school or GED including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist. Please Note: Professional and volunteer experience involving biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural resources, engineering, or closely allied fields may substitute, year for year, for experience. College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes. AND Ability to do basic functions on Microsoft Excel and Access. Basic operation of a personal computer. License/Certifications: Valid Driver’s License. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Positions filled through this pool will vary in the Preferred Qualifications and Special Requirements - typical qualifications may include: Ability to: Identify salmonids and other fish species in larval, juvenile and/or adult life stages. Identify salmonid redds. Obtain a crane operator certification. Operate handheld GPS and data logger devices. Knowledge of: Resistance board and fixed panel adult fish weirs. Operating of rotary screw and fence-panel (with live box) juvenile traps. Fish marking and tagging protocols. Fishery monitoring, observing, and sampling. Commercial fishing gear types and methods. Basic operation of motorized vessels Basic skills in aluminum and steel welding, bending and cutting. Basic carpentry skills. Operate coded wire tag (CWT) and passive integrated transponder (PIT) tag detectors. Certifications: Boat Certification. Basic CPR and First Aid certification. Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment: Successful completion of agency training and/or certification for assigned watercraft is dependent on supervisory direction, position need and training availability. First aid and CPR certification - must be obtained within one (1) month of hire. WDFW snorkel training and certification, with completion within six (6) months of hire and renewal expected annually.
