FULL-TIME/CAREER SEASONAL JUVENILE SALMON TRAP TECHNICIAN SCIENTIFIC TECHNICIAN 2 Fish Program Auburn, Washington – King County Please note: Salary listed does not include the 5% premium pay granted to all King County employees. In addition to the base salary, this position is eligible for 5% premium pay for positions located in King County. Career Season: 5.5 Months January 16 – June 30 Do you have a passion to protect and preserve salmon? Are you an experienced fish technician looking for seasonal employment? This career seasonal position operates a juvenile salmon screw trap on the Green River, and is a part of the Green River juvenile Chinook production evaluation project. The juvenile salmon trap technician captures, identifies, and enumerates juvenile salmonids migrating from the Green River. The position also contributes to the development and responsible use of sound, objective science to inform decision making by producing and communicating scientific information related to abundance and productivity of ESA-listed salmon and steelhead. This is an opportunity to assist in achieving healthy, diverse, and sustainable fish and wildlife populations by analyzing results from monitoring of major population groups of ESA-listed salmon and steelhead. DUTIES Our Juvenile Salmon Trap Technician will, Operate juvenile salmon trap continuously from Mid-January thru June, when conditions permit, sampling entire catch from trap a minimum of twice a day. Identify juvenile salmonids to species and enumerate by age, origin, mark type and species. Externally mark a portion of the catch for release above the trapping location to estimate trapping efficiency. Collect biological data and samples from a portion of the catch of each species (length and scales samples). Record and verify field data for accuracy; enter data into computer spreadsheets/databases. Inventory gear and equipment and maintain work sites to promote project efficiency and provide a professional appearance. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work Setting, including hazards: Roughly 90% of work will be conducted in the field. Potentially dangerous conditions may exist including work in high and swift water. Trapping activities involve exposure to inclement weather conditions (hot, cold, wet, windy, humid). Frequent bending, kneeling, and lifting is required. Trap operation requires the ability to handle and lift buckets with live fish weighing more than 50 pounds, and prolonged exposure of hands and fingers to cold water (temperatures 40-50 degrees). Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations. Schedule: Work hours are non-scheduled. The incumbent will typically work 40 hours per week, but will be expected to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays to accommodate operation of traps that fish 24/7. During periods of high stream flows or fish migrations, overtime will be required. Travel Requirements: Minimal travel to other Wild Salmon Production Evaluation (WSPE) trapping locations, as well as to WDFW in Olympia may be required. Tools and Equipment: Electronic sampling equipment, cell phone, calculator, and computer. Hand tools (cleaning rakes, shovels, crowbars, sledgehammers, etc.), and power tools (chain saws, drills, etc.). Fish collection gear including nets, seines, weirs, and screw traps. Customer Interactions: Sport fishermen, Tribal members, King County employees, WDFW hatchery staff, and private landowners.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field may substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least 6 semester or 9 quarter hours of natural science classes. Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science and two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1. Or Graduation from high school or GED including one year of high school science and two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist. License: Valid driver’s license. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of salmon and trout life histories and behavioral characteristics. Knowledge of safe live fish handling techniques. Ability to identify juvenile and adult salmonids and lampreys (alive and dead), and other incidental catch. At least 24 months of experience operating a juvenile salmon screw trap. Ability to collect high quality biological data and complete data entry/summarization into program spreadsheets & databases. Comfortable in the use of a variety of hand tools, power tools and small engine machinery. Experience communicating with the public, co-workers, and supervisor in a professional manner. Basic computer data entry skills with experience with Microsoft word and excel.
