OVERVIEW: 

The DHVI Scientific Program Leader II position will be responsible for working with DHVI Investigators in the coordination, evaluation, and scientific management of pre- and post-award activities, primarily with the Duke Regional Biocontainment Laboratory (RBL).  The position will serve as a key resource for the management of pre-award activities related to the submission of grants/contracts and post-award management of research programs in collaboration with DHVI Leadership, funded principal investigators (PIs) and Program Management Leadership.   

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Utilize scientific and program management expertise to develop project proposals, including project procedures, operational requirements, pricing and schedules. Work with individuals at various levels in the organization to ensure successful integration of all proposal components and ensure full compliance with all funding solicitation and sponsor requirements. 
  • Develop, coordinate, and implement scientific research, financial, and project management strategies to successfully manage large scale, complex translational research projects conducted by DHVI investigators; perform a variety of duties involved in the organization, documentation and compilation of basic and pre-clinical research and phase I clinical trials focused on emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases
  • Ensure required project data and information is regularly communicated to the project teams, study sponsor, participating laboratories and greater scientific community; generate and issue regular internal and external project reports and presentations for aforementioned groups. Plan, lead, and facilitate both regular cross functional project team meetings and external meetings with sponsors and collaborators. Serve as the primary communication channel with external collaborators, sponsors, and subcontractors. 
  • Monitor spending and forecasting variances for the RBL with DHVI Finance Unit (or relevant Department, Center, Institute). 
  • Plan and manage personnel effort allocation for all assigned programs across sponsored research grants/contracts and institutional fund sources.  
  • Monitor schedules and risk management plans to provide warnings of serious deviations or variations that may compromise project results. Proactively identify changes in work scope and ensure appropriate planning measures are taken with internal and external stakeholders to reassess, renegotiate, forecast, and amend scope of work responsibilities, proposals, staffing levels, resources, and budgets.  
  • Design and plan pre-clinical animal studies as requested by collaborators.  Oversee animal models work to ensure fulfillment of all study requirements and compliance with Duke IACUC regulations.  
  • Implement platforms and workflows for standardizing animal models work, including request forms, statements of work, study plan templates, and standard operating procedures to align with data management and sharing requirements. 
  • Utilize project management software (Smartsheet) to streamline communication among units within the RBL to forecast and plan assay requests, timelines, and data sharing with PIs, collaborators, and research sponsors. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned by DHVI and Program Management Leadership.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AT THIS LEVEL:

  • Education/Training: Completion of a Bachelor's degree in basic science, public health, clinical research or other related scientific field.
  • Experience: Five years of program management and/or research experience. Experience in Biotech/Biopharma/Clinical Trials/GMP is strongly preferred. Additional training in project management or related training desired. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.

PREFERENCES:

  • Graduate degree strongly preferred:
    • Completion of a Ph.D. or M.D. in basic science, public health, clinical research or other related scientific field with two additional years of program management and/or research experience required. OR 
    • Completion of a Master’s degree in basic science, public health, clinical research or other related scientific field with three additional years of program management and/or research experience required. OR 
    • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in basic science, public health, clinical research or other related scientific field with five additional years of program management and/or research experience.
